max hours for rebuild

anyone know whats the best and the max number of hours before u have to rebuild a 84 260 merc im sure im getting close just want to be safe thanx

No such thing on boats, Searay. But it sounds like you are a flyer, or have had a lot of experiance with the F.A.A... They do require teardowns at certain hour intervals. With boats, we just take a compression test at plug-replacement time. If the compression is within spec,there are no knocks,ticks or thumps that are out of the ordinary, it needs more hours.

thats great to hear 12 i heard it was around 1200 to 2000 hours on a merc 260 im gettin close to 2000 now mostly trolling and was hoping for more it still runs great great pressure on all cylinders so i hope to get a few more years outta her thanx for the info

Seray 245<br /><br />I heard of hours up to 3500 with no major problems on bigger outboards like yours - dont worry - have fun.

And it speaks volumes for your care and maintainence strategy.. Congrats on the 2K,and many more. Now, I want a 260 Merc :)
