Marvin Marine Performer - Should I leap?

I'm in the market for a new trailer, as the trailer I have is (I think), a 16' trailer, and I have an 18' Starcraft on it (the back of the boat hangs about 6" over the end of the bunks. I mentioned this to a neighbor who told me he would sell me his boat trailer for $300, as long as I took the boat and motor on the back of it. He told me that the trailer was a cantilever trailer, and was worth more than the $300, but he just wants the boat out of his garage. I quickly looked at the trailer, and I think he is probably right - which would mean I would have to unload the boat and motor if I bought it...or would have to play with it or restore it...

Anyone know anything about cantilevered trailers? If I understand it correctly, there is a lever which will cantilever the bunks.

I'm currently doing my first restore, so have no need for another project right now, but I took a quick look at the boat and motor, and they seemed pretty good on first glance. I was surprised - cloth and carpet both seemed, on a first look, to be pretty good. I'm going to pull the boat and trailer out of the garage and give it a better and longer look over. The story is that my neighbor bought the boat, motor and trailer in running condition for $1000, a few years ago, with the intent of restoring it. The boat is a Marvin Marine Performer, and has an Evinrude on the back. He then changed his mind after doing another restoration. He now just wants it out of the garage because he needs the storage space.

I've done a quick bit of research on Marvin Marine...and found nothing about them.

Anyone know anything about this company, this boat, or this motor? I'm going to pull the boat out of his garage in the next few days, and take a longer look at at. Sorry about the lousy photos - I was in a dark garage when I took them.

Before going far-- are the docs in order so registering to you is not a problem?

I expect so. Haven't confirmed this, but won't buy it unless they are. The guy I am buying from woudn't have bought it without registration.

If the stringers and transom are solid it will not be a difficult restore. If there is any rot the work and expense rises to the point landfill fees look cheap. In the end, even with you supplying labor, when finished the satisfaction comes from seeing the finished product and using it as it probably cannot be sold for what you have in it. That old motor is another whole project.

Re: Marvin Marine Performer - Should I leap?

So I took a more detailed look at it tonight. The trailer is too small for my boat - same size as my existing trailer. Rusty with paint peeling off, but seems to be solid. In terms of the boat, the boat hull seems solid (from a cursory inspection), and the fabric on the seats was OK. The floor however, while seeming solid, had a drop in it half way back - as if there were an additional layer of plywood in it. So all in all, I'm going to pass.
