I've noticed more retailers carrying MarPac brand parts. Kind of a "no frills" packaged marine parts supplier. I was wondering about the quality of MarPac, because the parts are considerably less than their name brand counterparts.
A pair of MarPac 12v SS Marine Power Outlets came in an order yesterday. I took a chance and ordered the Mar Pac brand because it saved a lot over ordering a regular brand name. These are only $5.95 each compared to $8.61 for the Sea Dog brand that is identical.
The description was "304 stainless steel". I figured only the face plate would be stainless, but when I opened it and disassembled the part, everything is stainless (ie no part stuck to a magnet except for the spring in the bottom), even the screws and electrical connectors.
So I was pleasantly surprised. I read where MarPac is just buying bulk, putting their packaging, and reselling for less. So this part is the same as the Sea Dog line. In fact, the stock photo that use says "Sea Dog" on the plug cover. Actually, the piece I received is just smooth with no brand name.
So if you have the choice between brand names and MarPac, its a fair bet the MarPac is the same part being sold for less.
