I saw a complete Mark 78A for sale with fuel tanks and controls. They said it should run. Would this motor be worth messing with? Its 78HP? I understand they are direct reversing, no gear changing. Opinions? Rare?

Actually 70hp. Uncommon, but not really rare. If it's not going to be used as a daily runner, it isn't a bad motor to "mess with", but if you're looking for a service motor for general use, keep looking. The direct reversing feature garnered the name "Dockbuster" due to the fact that not all of them would start easily in reverse to facilitate graceful docking.

Great looking motors, and when set up right, they do run well - BUT keeping them running does take a bit of knowledge, effort and perserverence - or a well stocked checkbook and knowing someone who possesses the other qualities.

I would pass on this motor, it wasnt a good design from the start.( It was Keikafers hard headessness that put this dockbuster into production, OMC invented the first shifter style now in standard use) Put your money into a more useful merc design unless just for nostalgic reasons. my 2cents

Yup, that was the one. Thanks for eliminating the temptation of me buying it! I really didn't need it, but thought it would be cool to have around. Good luck with it!

I really just wanted the harness but he didn't want to split it so I ended up giving him 300.00 for it. I already have a 58 Mark78 on a 58 20' Owens and now thinking about putting both motors on my boat..
