Mariner Serial Number Location

Hi all,
This is probably a really silly question, but where is the serial number located on my mariner 40hp 2 stroke engine? I have looked on the clamp, but the plate that i assume once had it on is missing. Is the number stamped into the engine itself anywhere under the cowling?

The motor looks just like this one;

I would like to know the year / model of the engine so i can buy a new water pump for it.

Depending on how new it is, you may find a disc like this on the lower RH side of the engine block:
