Mariner Serial Number Identification

Hello, I'm new to the forum and have a question about my Mariner engine. The ID plate on the engine lists it as a 15"scratched and not able to read" then the following number 8940S037505. I was told this was an 83 or 84 by the previous owner but I cannot seem to cross reference this with any charts I have been able to find. Any help on nailing down the year would be appreciated.

Your serial number should look more like 894-037505. The S makes it a short shaft. The actual model number for this one is 7015205 which has it as an 1985 while the serial number look up chart shows it as an 1984. MARINER 15D SANSHIN 15 M. Either year you want it to be is your choice but here's your parts catalog for it M-684-000101 AND UP
