I have a 1991 Mariner 40 4 cylinder. When you start it it takes 60 seconds for it to start pumping water after I start it. I put a new impeller in it. It had pieces missing and basicly wore out. It still takes just as long but it did help the stream that comes out because before it would just spit out water nothing very strong. Now it squirts good it just seems like it should start squirting sooner. Is this normal or should it start as soon as it is started?

It will not squirt instantly but water should start comming out within a few seconds. One or more of those oieces may have lodged in one of your water passages. I'd watch the temp very carefully.
