exactly what im thinking its the fuel pump/ filter because old gas no telling how old been sitting up and him cranking it maybe coulda cloged it ill check it. I really need to get a manual for this thing.Everything looks so simple in it but looks easy to confuse you at the same time.

keep in mind the stator issue I just don,t have the test for you to do a manual will have that. and also I don,t know if mine is compatible with yours can you get a number off the stator harness?the thing under the flywheel. there may be a paper with numbers on it

Re: Mariner Magnum 40

How hard is it to rebuild the carbs cause i noticed on the lower carb its dripping fuel slowly?Maybe a needle valve from what i read i dunno if that would have anything to do with it not cranking tho

Re: Mariner Magnum 40

not very hard here is the stator test for 40 HP 4 cylinder Find your stator number to test which one you need below Battery Charging System
Troubleshooting
A fault in the battery charging system usually will
cause the battery to become undercharged. Check
battery electrolyte level, and charge battery. See
?Electrolyte Level?, and ?Charging a Discharged Battery?,
preceding.
If battery will NOT accept a satisfactory charge, replace
battery.
If battery accepts a satisfactory charge, determine
the cause of the charging system problem as follows:
Visually check the following:
1. Check for correct battery polarity [red cable to
positive (+) battery terminal]. If polarity was incorrect,
check for damaged rectifier. See ?Rectifier
Test?, following.
2. Check for loose or corroded battery connections.
3. Visually inspect wiring between stator and battery
for cuts, chafing; and disconnected, loose, or
corroded connections.
4. Excessive electrical load (from too many accessories)
will cause battery to run down.
If visual inspection determines that battery connections
and wiring is OK, perform the following stator
and rectifier test:
Stator Test (Alternator Coils Only)
NOTE: Stator can be tested without removing from
engine.
1. Disconnect both yellow (stator leads).
2. Use an ohmmeter and perform the following test.
3. Replace stator if readings are outside ranges
shown.
STATOR TEST (BLACK STATOR)
9 AMP Stator (398-818535A5)
Test Leads To ? Ohm
Scale
Ohm
Reading
YEL and YEL R x 1 .8-1.1
9 AMP Stator (398-8778A_)
Test Leads To ? Ohm

16 AMP Stator (398-9710A33 & 398-9710A42)
Test Leads To ? Ohm
Scale
Ohm
Reading
YEL and YEL R x 1 .10-.50
STATOR TEST (RED STATOR)
Electric Start Engines 9 Amp Stator
Test Leads To ? Ohm
Scale

Electric Start Engines 16 Amp Stator

if your numbers are not on any of the upper mentioned stator tests do not use them as a guide for testing

You got that thing started yet?Did you follow the procedure I gave you.key to on,push in 5 sec then start. If he can do it,so can you.Don't go buying anything till you get a manual.
And yes,it sounds like your carbs need a rebuild.Just about to do mine....when parts arrive from US.....tic...toc....tic....toc.

well a sure fire way to see if it,s the carb is to get an external gastank and some fuel line then gravity feed the fuel straight into the carb. (Have the gas can higher than the Carb) using the bulb to feed to the carb bypassing all other sources of the fuel system. If it runs good then fix the fuel pump. if it doesn,t rebuild the carb I don,t know if this engine has oil injection or not so mix 50.1 oil gas mixture when doing this. Also if this boat sat for a long long time. oil may have seperated from the gas gas will float on oil and you wolud be sucking more oil tan gas. Just like water vinigar and oil seperate after not being shaken for some time. Remember none of this is stated to be a fact but are merely suggetions to try to help

yeah i tried what you said but can the carbs needing a rebuild, would that make the motor not run?

Re: Mariner Magnum 40

did you check to see if the choke is engaging and disengaging? some chokes Like my old one used to stick closed. this would definitly be causing this problem. Make sure the choke on the carb is opening fully

when i push it in i hear the click, so my assumption is that it is working

Re: Mariner Magnum 40

I would find the choke on the carb and check it just to be sure. it may click even if you have the manual choke engaged. Please make sure by looking at the choke mechanism on the carb. I just went out to test mine and even with the choke lever on I still get a thumping click which you might assume is a working choke. Find the manuel choke switch and turn it off.

Re: Mariner Magnum 40

Have you checked for a bright blue spark on all cyls, that will arc across a 7/16 gap?

Check with and without lanyard to determine if the lanyard is still wired correctly.

If no spark, or a weak spark, make SURE that the motor cranks at or above the minimum cranking speed of 300 RPM.
