Mariner I have reverse but not forward

I have a 83 Mariner 40hp that i just got the guy told me that he hit something in the water and it does not have forward but still has reverse. I got the motor home and started it up it goes in to both forward and reverse but it acts like its not engaging all the way into forward gear. any help thanks

Remove the cover and check the cables. I doubt this is your problem but if you are lucky you might have a stretched cable. Work the cables get an understanding of how it works. Then you might try adjusting the cable to give you more forward throw. This will tell you if it is the cable or not.

My boat had no reverse when I got it. It would go into reverse in the driveway with the muffs but not under load at the lake. Let me know what you find.
