mariner engine won't lift up

We have just bought a mariner40hp manual , we have got the engine down but now it won't lift back up, we are baffled . please can anyone advise us what the problem can be? Thank you

... using the abundant information u provided :D:D:eek: and assuming u have a control box and that `mariner40hp manual` indicates u have a book

if down trim works and up is dead it can be an electrical problem ...
id check for corrosion at some connection in the wires that connects the control box and the outboard.
start with the outboard end ...
1 unplug the connections clean em, lube them and reconnect. make sure connections are tight
2 retry up trim. if it still doesnt work ... it probably in the control box.
check trim micro switch operation etc ...
wld help if u have schematics of the wiring so u know exactly what connection u are looking for.

sorry I emailed in a hurry and didn't realise i had just put manual, yes i meant manual engine.

If you mean manual lift and not hydraulic then your reverse lock is engaged. Check the mechanism that locks the engine when you put the throttle into reverse.

Put the throttle/shifter lever into the forward position. If it is in reverse, the reverse lock will stop the engine from swinging up (like when you select reverse).
