mariner dies when going to reverse

i have a 86 model (i think) mariner 75hp. the motor cranks fine and idles fine. can turn off and crank easy, but most of the time when you go to reverse it dies. doesnt matter if you from nutral to reverse or foward to reverse. any ideas what it might be????

What is the recommended rpm idol for this engine? what is your rpm idol in neutral? What is your rpm in drive? do you have a Tachometer? Are your carburetor specifications correct? Have you done a link and sych? Is the timing correct? What year is your engine? What is the serial number? Do you have a manual?
