Mariner 9.9ML 682C 361494 (Lower unit Shift Shaft Broken/Issue)

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a mariner 9.9 and took the lower unit off to inspect the water pump, clean, etc, but then I I noticed it wasn't shifting the shift shaft is loose, so I removed the propeller, gears, the propeller shaft, to get behind the gears in the gearbox to see why it wasn't engaging (f,n,r) , when i slide in the shift shaft and turn it 90 degrees it sorta catches back on to the part and will slide back and forth normally, but if i put pressure on the part it with a screw driver, it disconnects again. I would imagine the gear would put pressure on it and cause it to slip loose as well, which is why i use the screw driver to test it out.

Has anyone run into this problem before or know a solution to getting the shift shaft loose to pull it out an inspect it. Thank you for all suggestions and advice, I appreciate all the help I can get!

Here is a larger image. I appreciate any feedback or ideas. Thanks. I am trying to figure out what exact part I need in order for the shift shaft to connect to that flip it will engage forward, neutral and reverse in the gear box. Thank you.

Here is the parts list for your s/n 682-361494:

Mercury Parts, 9.9 H.P.

Under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, see items 8/9. Remove screw 9 and then lift out retainer bracket 8. The complete shift shaft should then lift out. When you get the shift shaft out, look to see if the ramp is pinned to the shaft or screwed. I believe it may be pinned on your engine. Let us know when you get it out.

Well I fixed the problem with the lower unit shift shaft, Thank you for your help, I appreciate it. It took about two weeks to get the part, but the wait was well worth it. lol. I was looking into the 9.9 and was curious as to it being converted into a 15hp? What are your thoughts?? I put up my two motors for trade on Craigslist for a 15hp + Trade 2 outboard motors(5 and 9.9) 120psi comp for a 15hp+ but if its possible to convert it then I'd much rather keep my motors. Do you know which 15hp is compatible with the one I've listed? If so your guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you, and happy holidays.
