So I have a 1983 mariner 80 that was formerly controlled by a quicksilver remote box with a push to choke ignition. This box has ignition, choke, throttle, shifting, and trim controls. The boat I am putting it on is a center console set up for a yamaha. I will need to take the harness and wire it to the ignition which is a stand alone ignition switch, a seperate choke switch, and a remote box with the trim switches in it. I have not so far been able to find a wiring diagram for this switch though to see what wires are for what. I was trying to avoid the tedious work of mapping everything out on my own and some trial and error. If someone knows where I can find a good wiring diagram for these harnesses and the remote box let me know. Seems that I have found just about every one except the one I need. Thanks

Put up a picture to identify the controller. They make more than one.

Re: mariner 8 pin engine harness.

i know its been a while but i have been out of pocket for a while with school and...well...life. Anyways, here is a picture of the harness that I am trying to map. The harness goes from the engine up to the controls on the dash. like I said before, I used to have a quicksilver box but am having to wire everything separately now. I need to know what wires are for what. Wire colors are
red
black
grey
purple
brown
black/yellow
yellow/black
yellow/red

Re: mariner 8 pin engine harness.

Bigmaac, Those colors sound like standard Merc and OMC ign wires. That plug also looks like it might fit your Merc, unless you have the exterior quick disconnect plug on the Starboard side. That plug looks like it would fit my '93 Merc, for example.

The colors should be the same as on your motor. Red is battery, purple is ign accessory, black is ground, grey is tach signal, black/yellow is ign killer, yellow/black is choke solenoid, yellow/red is starter solenoid and brown is likely overheat alarm, which you may not have on your motor.

Re: mariner 8 pin engine harness.

thanks for the response. I guess I did not explain my issue right though. I knew that the plug would fit my motor. It is the plug that came with the motor and I had been using it for years. The problem was that it WAS wired to a quicksilver remote control box and the that remote box is now history. I am putting this motor on a boat that was previously set up for a yamaha instead of a merc. My quicksilver box had the harness already wired in and it had everything for my engine controls right there on the box. The yamaha setup had everything scattered on the dash. What I did not know was how to wire that harness to the yamaha ignition key switch and the separate choke switch. I found a layout for the key switch on this thread... http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-ev...ions-electrical-tach-warning-horn-492614.html . Even though it is not the same motor, the key switch was set up the same as my old key switch so I could figure out which way to wire the new yamaha key switch. Once I found that, I mapped out the yamaha key switch and wired it up and it works like a charm. I bypassed the nuetral safety switch, because I had one go out on my once on the water and it was a pain to fix out there and they are too darn expensive to replace. I also kept the old kill switch that was on my old remote and since I never unhooked it, i just have to stick it on the dash and I have a kill switch(something that was not on the dash already). I took the choke wire and wired it to a switch going to power and it works great. I wired it to where it will choke any time but that is ok with me.
