I cannot idle my mariner 40hp under 1100 revs, I adjusted the idle screw and there's even a gap between the stop and the end of the idle screw, has anyone had something similar to this and I suspect that that's too high to be putting it into gear, any suggestions thanks

Is this a new problem?
Is the motor new to you?
Did it idle properly in the past?

It could be anything from Carb air/fuel mixture, to timing advance.

Does it start easily?

Please post model, serial #, and year.

Try this. When its at the higher rpm and you go to lower the RPM - manual choke it a little. If it seams to want to run under choke I'd say the low speed jet(s) and plugged. you may try adding a good carb cleaner to the gas and run it for a few hours to se if it improves .... Cheap way to check / fix. (MAybe ...)

Can you actually see the butterfly plates in the carb(s)? And if so are they actually closed. It is possible that one of them is lose and moved out of place just a little keeping the butterflies from closing all the way closed. It doesn't take much to have it idle fast. So check that out and see. The timing can also cause that problem if it is advanced too far at idle. JMHO!

700-750 RPM best. Try running some SeaFoam through it. Could it be running lean?

Are you removing the control cable from the anchor point before you start adjusting the idle screw? The cable might need to be adjusted longer to be able for the screw to hit the stop
