Hello all, just joined the other day, first post........
A friend of mine has what he thinks is a 1985 outboard. I did some searching on the web for the serial number, from what I got from this it says 25C EL 1983.
The actual label on the plate states:

695 L 554987
25E
Japan

1. Does 25C = Through hub exhaust (Uses 9 7/8" x 10 1/2" prop + spacer, washer, castle nut, cotter pin) )
2. E = Electric start
3. L = Long drive shaft
4. Japan = Yamaha
5. Not sure on year, but from the charts, 1983 25C EL was the only one that had my serial range.

Any info or corrections welcome, model number would me nice.

Have a nice day

Thank you

Hey Fun Times,

Thank you very much for the reply, first time I have messed with a small outboard, and Mariner.
Why does so much different info show up for the same serial # on these units (autorepairmanuals.biz/page/608045), and how do you cross
a serial # to model #.

Thanks again, have a nice weekend..

For engines that start at 1980+, there are some websites that you can input the serial number and retrieve a model number. I've seen a few 1978/9's pop up from time to time but it's rarer than 80+. I'm really not too sure why the serial number charts seem to be off a year or three at times but dead on with others. Guess they're used as a general guide vs the computer system.:noidea:

Either year you have, the link above can be used to help find a part number then an online search of the number is your friend for best cost...Also try running the numbers through EBay or the iboats store as well.:) If you can buy from iboats, the revenue generated helps keep the forums up and running too.:tea:
