We have a mariner 225 on a 2150 bow rider. It goes beautifully, but all of a sudden it will just cut out. Feels like somebody tripped the kill switch. The boat comes to an abrupt halt. We leave it for a few seconds - then it goes again only to cut out. Generally doing anything between 2500rpm to 5500rpm. Goes for about 5 minutes and then cuts.

We thought the may be water in the fuel, but the fuel filter is clear. We did add 25l of gas (unleaden) and then the problem started.

Any suggestions?

Check the primer ball when it cuts out, see if it is collapsed. if it is you have a restriction in the fuel system before the ball. Clogged vent, or picking up something in the tank on the pick up tube, something like that. If you are picking up something w/ the tube, it will fall off the tube as the engine dies, when the tube loses suction. Good luck, Joe P.S. Could even be a piece of gasket or sealer, from sending unit float housing

Thanks for reply, will definately try. You don't think it could be water? Anything to do with uinleaded petrol? Draining the tank and rteplacing the full, help?

Do you have a water seperator, is there water in your fuel filter? If it's an EFI it will have a water sensor in the filter under the cover, & a warning light on the dash. Use what you have to pinpoint the problem. As I said check the ball when it stalls. Have a spare portable 6 gal. tank, with hose & primer ball, when it stalls, connect the spare, & see what happens. If the problem goes away, you know it is in your tank, or the fuel in your tank. If it don't go away, you at least eliminated a couple of things, & can look else where Good Luck, Joe

Re: Mariner 225

Once again, thank you for the reply.

We checked the fuel filter and found a couple of drops of water. We cleaned out the filter and the problem did not go away. We re-checked the filter and there was no evidence of any water but the motor still cuts after running beautifully within 5-10 minutes.

It is an EFI motor. Your theory about checking the ball is a good one, and running it on a 6gal auxiliary fuel tank will definately isolate if it is a fuel problem. We will be trying the boat out in the few weeks and we'll let you know. Hopefully it is just a simple fuel blockage that we can clear. Otherwise, the boat goes really well.

Regards - Zump
