I got my little Mariner 2 stroke 2.2 HP out of storage ( ~ 8 years )the other day, cleaned the fuel tanks and lines, and bingo! she started on the first pull.
I shut it down quickly since it was out of water but then restarted it with a flush device on and again in a bucket of water. It output water at the exit holes so I figured impeller/pump was OK.
I took the boat down to launch and the motor wouldn't start. Actually, it started with choke closed but died when opening choke and hasn't run since.
Thumb test for compression - OK
Spark looks good but replaced plug anyway
Disassembled, cleaned, reassembled carburetor (it was really clean)
Visual inspection of piston, cylinder walls and ports thru plug hole shows them to be in pristine condition. Same goes for reed valve at the intake end.
There's a bleed hose running attached to what I think are supposed to be (2)one way valves. Only one of them tests as one way, the other is open. Could this be the problem ?
I'm pretty well stuck here. I guess I'll check compression and spark with the proper gauges, but I'm having a hard time believing its either one of those based on how well it ran recently. I'm thinking some kind of fuel delivery problem but its a gravity feed carb that's clean so.........
I know it's only a putsy 2 horse but I hate to pitch it.
