Hope I'm not duplicating a thread here and tried due diligence in making sure this question hasn't been exactly asked. Sorry if so!

I have a 1985 Mariner 5. I turn it to choke and it cranks, however when I flip it to run it dies. If I turn it from choke to run on VERY high RPMs, it will occasionally not die, however while running in neutral it is very hair-trigger ... either it runs super high or dies out. On the occasion that I can get it to run in gear, it appears to run smooth.

I have taken the carb apart and cleaned it twice. I have cleaned out the area where the spark plug is - it was a bit gunky but not too bad. I have changed the fuel and am now out of options. Any advice is helpful and apologies if I can't answer questions too quickly (don't have regular internet) or too knowledgeably (pretty new to all this). Thanks for the help--

Re: Mariner 1985 will choke but not turn

Hi,

I am new to boating and outboards in general too,

I have a 1987 suzuki 4hp 2stroke that sounds like it had a similar problem to yours,

(with the engine on the boat and in the water) I would start it in gear with the choke on and full throttle, and it set of like the clappers, i could knock the choke off and continue to cruise around the lake at over half throttle, but then as i came back to the jetty and started to reduce speed, the engine would just die!! but then if i started it again with the choke on and full throttle off it went.

So i stripped and cleaned out the carb twice!! which did nothing so i then purchased a slow start / idle jet and that did nothing so in the end i came across a brand new carb on ebay! hey presto it runs and starts an absolute dream (it is my best running engine).

You could send you carb off to be ultrasonic cleaned but this may still not solve your problem.

regards
Dave
