Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

Good story, Jim...my Dear Father, who taught me the biz always said good mechanics were 'touched in the head'...have never met a GOOD one that's normal...'cept when I look in the mirror...LOL....when growin up I thought myself mechanically adept, but it took 4 years under his eagle eye to consider myself good enough, and I have spent every day since learning....over the years I have had many tech's come and go...almost all started with a high school diploma and eagerness.....over the years I have learned a few things about people...one of which is that really, really good mechanics are not made, they are born..they take to it naturally.....
PS...I do have my 'own' boat, I try to get my kids out every weekend [weather permitting] and [Iam embarassed to admit] it only took me 9 years to finish it....

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

This has nothing to do with the salary but I just restored a 1970 trojan center consol New tanks new motor trans wireing deck gauges t-top cut from marlin tower seats seat mounts cutlass bearing packing steering paint canvas cleats hoses keel repair ( put on a trailer it didnt fit)
switch panel electronics. I looked for a mechanic to do the engine install and found that it would take a couple of months. I couldnt figure out why so long. Now I know frustration. they were alowing time to walk away and cool down. What a pain in the ---- I wont do that again. And I still dont have the motor right and totaled the impeller for the mercruiser raw water pump yesterday there goes another 50.00.

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

if I were you, I would start out of my garage.(part time)
buy a cheap motor, overhaul it, and re-sell it
for a profit. you can start slow and won't have
any customers breathing down your neck (unless
you don't do a good job on the rebuild)
you can get your feet wet and see if you really
like it and also if you have the aptitude.
I bet you could make a very nice living if you
have little/no overhead once you got a following.
just my .02
M.Y.

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

My buddy, who is an excellent 25 + year marine mechanic, makes far less per hour than I do wrenching on buses for our local mass transit district. However, what he earns doing side jobs more than makes up the difference. Nevertheless, benefits such as retirement, paid sick leave, vacation, etc...should be factored in as well, and although he works for one of Portland's premier high performance boat retailers, I don't think his benefit package comes close to matching mine. I guess all I'm saying is that money isn't everything. But I'll tell ya, I'd much rather do what he does for a living than what I do...

Walt
