Re: Marine Mechanics Salary
Just a thought.... True story - at least as told to me by my local boat shop owner...

Two guys who love boating were airline mechanics. They both were layed off a few years ago from a big company here locally (St. Louis).

The owner of the shop knew these guys, as they were avid boaters as I mentioned. These guys asked for work, both saying boat repair would be their ideal jobs, something they always wanted to do. So, he hired them to help around the shop. Minor repairs, tune-ups, etc. The idea being that they would eventually go to boat repair school.

One guy quit in 2 months the other guy quit in 3 months. The owner of the shop said he didn't see them much after that, and later heard that one guy actually sold his boat.

So, I asked, why would these guys quit? The owner said..

It hard, the hours are either too long or too short, it's seasonal. The shop has no A/C. 12 hour days and many weekends are common in the summer, not much work at all in the winter (doesn't leave much time for boating)!

Unlike car mechanics (who also have my respect) a boat mechanic has some very difficult circumstances to work with, nothing is easy on a boat! I know, it took me 6 hours for a tune up. 1 hour for the plugs/wires, 1 for the oil/filter and cap/rotor, 4 hours taking the interior out and putting it back in!

I don't like paying the price for marine parts, I always complain about my boat repair bills. But, I always give my mechanic something for Christmas, I find fifty bucks or a few cases works nice! They really appreciate it this time of year.

So, the meaning of this story.. be carefull what you wish for. Make sure this is REALLY what you want to do. If so, go for it. But you may want to see if you can find part time work around a boat shop sometime first!
