Hey Wildman, Ive been a tech since 1980 multicertified. Went commission 2 years ago, for the first time and made 70,000 my second year im at 62,5... I think the average is probably in the fourtys. Truthfully I know alot of guys who dont make that. Its a seasonal job, winter months suck. Good Luck.

Our shop labor rate is $70.00 per hour, we make 50% of that.

I need to shut my shop down and move to Texas. I want to know how he's paying the worker's comp, liabiltiy insurance, shop overhead and still feed his children and buy shoes for the wife on $35 an hour. The IRS stopped us from using the 1099 on the guys years ago. Around here the mechanics usually get anywhere from $12 to $16 per hour.

Wildman, enjoying what you do for a living really helps, especially when you are looking for a career wrenching boats...around here techs on hourly wage [with some benefits] are between $11 and $18......you are going to work like mad all summer, and look at 3 months pulling unemployment in the winter....training is vital, the basics of engines, hydralics, gear trains are still there, but the specifics vary more than you think...having provable skills to offer an employer means more $$ for you....

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

We are looking for mechanics for next season (2 more) and we pay $31-35-per billed hour with no benefits. Just like "Rod Knocking" gets. You can make a very good living at it if you are good. I have opne guy who makes close to $100k every year but he is very fast and has no comebacks. I have had other guys make 25/yr on the same deal. They just weren't very good. If you are a beginner this is not the way you want to get paid. If you are good you will make what you are worth. It really is a pretty neat way to make a living.

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

A good experienced marine mechanic can get 60-100K in a busy shop. Billed hours or flat rate.
Working for yourself sounds good until youve actually done it. Then you find yourself working twice as hard for less money. There's this pesky thing called overhead.

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

Just a thought.... True story - at least as told to me by my local boat shop owner...

Two guys who love boating were airline mechanics. They both were layed off a few years ago from a big company here locally (St. Louis).

The owner of the shop knew these guys, as they were avid boaters as I mentioned. These guys asked for work, both saying boat repair would be their ideal jobs, something they always wanted to do. So, he hired them to help around the shop. Minor repairs, tune-ups, etc. The idea being that they would eventually go to boat repair school.

One guy quit in 2 months the other guy quit in 3 months. The owner of the shop said he didn't see them much after that, and later heard that one guy actually sold his boat.

So, I asked, why would these guys quit? The owner said..

It hard, the hours are either too long or too short, it's seasonal. The shop has no A/C. 12 hour days and many weekends are common in the summer, not much work at all in the winter (doesn't leave much time for boating)!

Unlike car mechanics (who also have my respect) a boat mechanic has some very difficult circumstances to work with, nothing is easy on a boat! I know, it took me 6 hours for a tune up. 1 hour for the plugs/wires, 1 for the oil/filter and cap/rotor, 4 hours taking the interior out and putting it back in!

I don't like paying the price for marine parts, I always complain about my boat repair bills. But, I always give my mechanic something for Christmas, I find fifty bucks or a few cases works nice! They really appreciate it this time of year.

So, the meaning of this story.. be carefull what you wish for. Make sure this is REALLY what you want to do. If so, go for it. But you may want to see if you can find part time work around a boat shop sometime first!

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

Thats a good story Jim, truthfully I dont know of many boat mechanics that actually own personal boats unless its a fixer upper to resell, and yes there is usually no AC, and your usually hanging upside down,Gotta take the bad with the good.

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

Airline mechanic's...Thats funny! They really dont know the "Real World" of aviation! Let them run an FBO! (Fixed Base Operator) for you that dont know. Its alot like a marine mechanic but you never know your season. Cause you never know when the planes are comming. The airline mechanic do (schedules). Marine mechanic's dont have to sign logbooks (and that is kept on record) and they get paid alot more. What's wrong with that picture?

To respond...Airline work is alot easyier than working on a boat or working on a airplane (because in airline work you are just givin a piece of the aircraft to work on.) In general aviation (FBO) you have to do it all by yourself! I think that's why they left the boat industy....In a nutshell.......They were lazy!

Re: Marine Mechanics Salary

To be a boat mechanic you have to work long hard hot sunny days and only watch others enjoy there toys the only water you see is on sea trials and when you get to help some rich smuck that cant work a drain plug. but look at the up side if you are good at it you can join me in mexico in the winter months
