Marine bondo revisited?

I know this was discussed recently but it was not on my radar screen at the time.

I'm in the process of preparing my doghouse for priming and painting;

I have a lot of little minor imperfections to fill in, along with the holes that I screwed the drink holder on with to get good adhesion while gluing with epoxy.

If this was an auto, I would get some stuff in a tube to apply to the imperfections. Is there anything equivalant that would be suitable for marine use? I don't mind mixing up some bondo like material but to do the epoxy with glass bubbles makes it a PITA to sand down prior to primer application.

Now keep in mind I'm not a real boat guy,but... I would think that regular old bondo would work ok for what you're doing here. The reapirs are not going to be below the water line or kept real wet. I would think that it would work fine. My only thought would be is how hot does the doghouse get?

Just my $.02

Best of luck!

Above water, don't foresee a problem there. If the imperfections are small enough or just in the paint, use some the light weight bondo], sand and paint.

I think I'd still go with the fiberglass-style bondo. You'll pay about 10-20% more for it. If you buy just a single qt you won't even notice the price difference. I think it sands better too.

Is the fiberglass epoxy or poly? If it's epoxy you're probably better off applying the bondo over a layer of primer. I think the mechanical bonds will be better between the primer and the poly vs. the epoxy and the poly.

Could you not just use a good old fashion wood filler and fair it out with that? After all one or two good coat's of glass and poof it's sealed........but then again you standard's are generally pretty hi ..........:love:

Edit: Opp's that is wood is it not?

Nope TG, it's all glass. I rummaged around my auto refinishing stuff and found a tube of Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty. It's the red stuff you see them use down in the body shop. It's not catalytic but I'm only using it for slight depressions. I'll mix a batch of epoxy peanut butter to fill the holes I drilled to hold the drink holder on when I epoxied it to the doghouse.

Boomer, for what it's worth, The guy on Ship Shape TV says the "marine" bondo is more chemically fit for bonding to poly and epoxy resins. Also fairs better than auto bondo.

Again, it's what he said.
