From 3M's site:

3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 White. The adhesive sealant is extremely strong, retains its strength above or below water line. Stays flexible too - allows for structural movement. Has excellent resistance to weathering and salt water.
High performance polyurethane adhesive/sealant becomes tack-free in 48 hours, cures completely in 5-7 days

Re: marine 3 m sealant 5200 (not the fast cure kind)

Did,nt mean to high jack seahorse but seeing your on the subject of 5200 I got a question .
On the caulking gun type tube it says to use within 24 hrs of breaking the seal . Now I can,t imagine using a hole tube in 24 hrs . Will it keep by just wrapping the screw on tip with tape or should I clean the tip out and tape the end of the tube .
I sure don,t want to waist a 12.00 dollar tube . Any suggestions .. :)

I'll catch flak for this its an old painters tip I used, get a container of some type and put about an inch of water in it. I used a bucket, anyways drop the gun in the bucket so that just the plastic tip is submerged. It will last a lil more than the 24 hrs on the tube directions. I left mine inthere for 4 days and only the first 1/4 inch of glue was hard. Just be sure to dry the end good before using it.

Problem with 5200 is it cures underwater and in air. Once that stuff is open it's almost impossible to stop the curing process. What I did was use a big screw with some vaseline on it then wrapped the whole tube with saran wrap an put it in the fridge. It lasted about a month. I got the last little bit of it by cutting the bottom of the tube open and scooping it out.

Tell ya what, I use 5200 in the big calk size, shove a big nail in the tip, throw it on the shelf, good for months no problemo:thumb:

(regular cure, not fast cure)

Yeah, I just duck tape the tip of the tube and it lasts forever (even in warm Mississippi weather).

A wire nut will hold it in check for months. ( fill the nut about 1/4 full) After 6 months or so just use a 3/16 drill to clean the spout.
after a year or so you may need to go in the bottom end to get the last of it. The fast cure is a different ball game.

I get a few months out of a tube wrapped with tape, wax paper, or what ever is laying around, sealed over with some 5200.
After a while the tube will go 80% solid no matter what I do tho

I had the same issue but used the Marine Tex instead of the 5200. It's more rigid than the 5200 also.

I think you should be asking how long Resin and Fiberglass will shelf for .. or how long does it take for Resin to cure.

If your keel was that thin you should be using Fiberglass.

As for the 5200 it should be cured in 7 days if im not mistaken. But you can put it in the water at anytime after the application.

It does not get hard as JB weld.

As far as the longevity of the tubes .. you can still use the product inside if you cant get it to trigger out of a caulk gun. Just stab it close to the tip and squeeze it out..then after that dries you cut a little lower on the opposite side of the tube. .. rinse and repeat until you have to just cut it completely open at the bottom. I have tubes from years ago that I can still use :) .

Oh and they do sell 5200 in small toothpaste type tubes ;) .

YD. Hope you get back to us on that 5200 Vs. Fiberglass thing.

^^^ I'm with YD, sounds like a job for fiberglass and resin, not 5200.

For storing 5200, moisture is your enemy as moisture cures 5200. I live in the desert with very low humidity and just put the cap back on the tube, chuck it my tool box and it's good for atleast a year.
