Manually Turn Flywheel on VP 4.3GL

Good Day! I have a fairly basic question but any information I can get would be helpful. I have a Volvo Penta 4.3GL-A I/O engine and need to turn the flywheel manually to inspect the ring gearing for chips/wear. I have heard this is simple and that I need to remove the spark plugs but am not sure what bolt I need to turn that will then spin the flywheel.

Also, I am going to replace my starter and was wondering if theres anything I need to do when re-installing other then lining everything up and bolting it in (with the battery removed of course).

Thanks!

Put a wrench on the alternator pulley, it should turn the engine easily.

thank you for such a quick reply!

I attached an image of my motor and just so I get this right I can spin the nut on the altenator I have the arrow pointing to correct. Thats not going to loosen the altenator or something like that :) I'm a novice when it comes to this.

thanks again!

That is correct,If the belt is tight and you turn it clockwise with the spark plugs out it should be fine.
Also BE SURE to use new bolts when installing the starter. The bolts are a one use only part.

Re: Manually Turn Flywheel on VP 4.3GL

So I followed these directions and turned the flywheel and checked it for marks. Sure enough the grinding noise I had heard with my previous starter left some marks on the ring gearing.

So now comes the real question, there are small nicks in some spots on the ring gearing. Does this mean I need to pull the motor and replace the gearing? And of course, what happens if I dont :)

Thanks!

Small nicks no, just file 'em smooth if you can.

Missing or broken teeth yes new ring gear or flywheel.
