At least there's 2 or 3 of us that see how it really is...

Don't sweat these guys blowing smoke. They insist they are right all the time, and bash anyone not in their narrow view of what is right or acceptable. They love to be rude and bitter in their responses to new people on the forum, and bicker with one liners to pad their post count, in an attempt to validate their bitter responses and "extensive knowledge". They typically throw out either "bah, marine application blah blah stock factory blah" or "need more info, blah blah, vessel length, deadrise, blah blah, oh, yes of course that engine you mentioned in the first post will only require 87 octane". Humorously, whenever I post a question with detailed information about my boat, engine, etc. and what I've already diagnosed and tried for a solution, I get no responses from the post *****s.

I see no reason why your idea won't work. I also see no reason to do it that way. Personally I would just get the appropriate bracket and hardware to make the Alpha drive work, or better yet go back to a Bravo. Merc provided a system that works automatically and required minimal maintenance. I don't know of any better ways. if you have too much cam for a Alpha drive you have no option except to start in gear so the point is moot, but if not the case just use the interrupter switch. It's simple and it works.

you really should consider starting your own 4-M for you and like mined people if this one is doing you such a disservice

P.S. thank you for the opportunity to pad my post count

I have a '96 Donzi Sweet 16 with a 4.3 liter v6 and it came with an interupter that orinally had an incorrect strength return spring in the mechanism and didn't work right until they had a recall and corrected the little spring. Very frustrating. Manually doing it couldn't be much worse.

Not having an auto interuptor would be a pain. I seriously doubt that you could stall the motor for .2 seconds and remove the load fromn the gears at the same time......everytime. For that very reason, it is a bad idea. However, with that said, you can do it your way.
Unfortunately, at some point, you will feel like a tool when you are explaining to someone what you did, and that is why you hit their boat.

No way he'll admit what he did when he can't get it out of gear and hits somebody.

With the attitude he has, he'll blame it on the factory switch (which he doesn't even have in his boat) not working. It obviously couldn't be HIS fault ......

Do new current model Mercruiser IO's still use the same type of shift interrupter switch? I had a 1979 boat with plenty of wear and tear and that switch was the worst to deal with problem on that boat. Granted everything was worn out but man what a problematic design. I hope they have something a little more user friendly and technologically advanced in today's newer models. Even to adjust the switch you needed two people, the boat out of the water etc. etc..

i changed the switch on our alpha 1. it came in a kit and changed the old switch plate for a new one. used plunger switch instead of the mirco arm style.

seemed to work fine for me
