Hi I have a 1990 Johnson 25 horse with a manual prime valve.I think this valve is suppose to prime the cylinder w/fuel when you push in on the key.i can hear the cylinder clicking. There is fuel spurting out one of the outlets on this valve.the other oulet has a hose and runs to the carb (top side) and into the crank Case. The engine runs great after started as long as it doesnot sit long.I think the fuel in draining down to this valve and the valve cant prime the engine.Does this make sense and can anyone give tips on what to do and how to check.model # 25ELCEB Thanks Hugh

Re: Manual primer valve.Help!!

I had the same problem with my 89 200XP. I could hear the selinoid clicking when I pressed the key in, but it would start hard the first time each day. After that it would run great. I replaced the selinoid and it works great now. One thing you might try is to switch the small red or orange lever on the selinoid to manually prime the carbs. This worked for me, but a pain in the butt to pull the hood off the engine when I wanted to start it each day.

Hold on here. There should be no fuel spurting out of the other outlet on the primer. If you motor has 2 carbs there should be another hose from the outlet to the other carb. If you only have 1 carb there is probably a T that goes into the first hose. Look around, something is missing or not hooked up to the primer.

Re: Manual primer valve.Help!!

Hi Hugh<br />Just a little confused here. What you describe is an electric primer solenoid, actuated by a key switch remote. The manual primer is just that, a manual pump on the motor you pump with your hand. There is a red lever on the primer solenoid. When the lever is in line with the solenoid it is in the run position for normal operateration. If the lever is crosswize to the solenoid it is in the manual mode. This allows you to prime the motor during a manual emergency rope starts, ie dead battery. To test funtion. start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temp. Set engine speed to about 2000 RPM. Push in on key switch. RPM should drop about half. To test for clogs, get a syringe and a 1/8" ID clear vinyl hose. Fill syringe with isopropyl alcohol. Connect the hose to any suspected cloged fittings and lightly presurize syringe. Clean cloged fittings. To test valve on soleniod. Connect hose to solenoid with light presure on syringe you should have fluid out both outlets with the red lever in the prime position. with the lever in the run position you should have no fuel. FYI the #s you post are for a 1989 model.
