Re: Manifold Replacement

Your gonna need to drain the whole motor.
The block and the manifolds. It's easier to remove the risers then the manifolds.
If they aren't drained it can run into the exhaust.
You'll be surprised how heavy they are.
Some manifolds have studs with nuts, some have bolts.
It easier to replace the manifold if there is a stud you can put it on.
A 6-7in. piece of all thread works real good.
And remove the plugs. One little slip and they can break.
If you don't drain the block it's possible the water can get into the exhaust ports???
It's easier to work on a motor with out it dripping and water running all over.

Re: Manifold Replacement

i replaced mine manifold last year and the bolts were no problem. assuming you have a good toolbox you should be fine.

the job is not very hard to do, the only pain in the @ss was to clean the head from the old gasket and handling a heavy part with limited space available.

I saw a triple block and tackle setup in a hunting/sporting goods for about $20. It was rated at 500 lbs for lifting elk/moose for field dressing. I put a 2x4 across the gunnels and it works very nicely for hoisting/lowering manifolds solo. When belayed at the right level it leaves both hands free to line up the bolts and no more broken spark plugs.

Re: Manifold Replacement

As far as draining the block comment earlier, did that mean open the drain plugs on the manifold or a different drain?
You don't drain the block. Only the manifolds. You just don't want water pouring into the exhaust when you pull off the riser. That's the only issue. The block is lower than the manifolds and there is no connection between the manifolds and the block other than the hose going to the manifold from the thermostat housing. Just remove that hose and you are good to go.

They aren't that heavy. I replace my 454 manifolds and they are lighter than yours. Your biggest issue is how close the boat is to the manifolds to prevent them from sliding off the studs.

Since it sounds like they already removed one of your manifolds for your other repair, that one will be easy to remove again. I am sure the other one won't be much trouble either.

Re: Manifold Replacement

Well...posting in the Volvo section is probably the biggest clue.

Ahhh, was just looking under "What's New" postings. Never looked to see the specific section it was in. My bad...

Are you referring to the line that connect to part number 12? I also have 5.0Gi

Re: Manifold Replacement

Your picture is too small. Its the 1" diameter hose that goes to the thermostat housing that you need to disconnect. There are no water passages between the manifold and the block so its only the riser/manifold connection you need to worry about.

This is an OMC picture but is identical to Volvo. Hose #13 is what you disconnect

Amazing to me the advice that you need to drain the whole block. I am sure the advice is from one that has never changed a manifold.

Lots!!
That's the way I was trained.
LOL. So if you drain the manifold by removing the hose going to it, explain to me how water in the block is going to affect anything? There is only one connection between the block and the manifold and it just got removed.
