Just out of curiosity, did you have a PFD on during these unscheduled dunks?

Ask and you shall receive.

dog boat ladder

Actually if you Google dog boat ladder, you get 237,000 results. Enjoy.

I'm all about any redneck solution! I need something that works if you find one! I've got two English labs, one 95 lbs and the other north of 110 that I haul in via Ruff Wear life jackets should I get close enough to grab them. I damn near drowned trying to get them to use the doggie ladder shown on the link, they wanted nothing to do with it.

(Sorry for the hijack to the original OP)

Yeah we had a pretty bad situation a couple years ago when we were out on the 4th of July. After a few too many drink we decided to head in... but didn't realize for almost 2 minutes that my boyfriend had fallen off the back when we we took off (too fast - Capitan's fault!) Fortunately he was just treading water and we got back to him in time, but such heavy boat traffic, could have been a horrible situation :( Scary just to think about!

My lady went into the drink just a couple days ago. While wrapping a piling... with one foot on the boat, the other on the dock. Yep.....after a long stretch and the look of fear she went in. She didn't mind getting wet as much as the embarassment from going overboard in front of several folks at the waterfront restaurant and tiki. Her first.

My first was several years ago. A captain was getting me liquored up on rum. I fell on the boat. Two steps up to the gunnel...and then on my butt in the cockpit. I don't drink rum anymore.

Two solutions, truimphrick...(1) don't go to the stern with your valuables, (2) don't use a pecker for bait.

I went fishing with wife and brother in law. coming back in he grabbed the pear before we came to a stop. The boat and pear seperated and he fell into the water. He thrashed and kicked trying to get on the pear as I tried to pick him back up two times. I gave up and decided to rest his arms only to find out that he was in chest deep water and decided to walk up the boat ramp.

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I have not yet been thrown off of a boat, but I have come close. While teaching waterskiing at a Boy Scout camp in TN, I was prepping to throw the ski rope out when a wake hit my boat pretty hard. Luckily, I was just knocked off my feet. I was standing on the sunpad over the motor (I/O) and only ended up with a twisted knee from landing wrong.

I am also guilty of waking another boat. Same summer, same camp, same thing.... I had a boy fall while learning to ski (go figure), so I circled back hard to pick him up due to heavy traffic. I failed to account for the wake of my boat hitting a bass boat near shore, and looked up in time to see the man nearly thrown off of his boat.:( He got mad, I'm sure said a few choice words I just couldn't hear, and took off before I could recover my passenger and apologize to him.

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I dumped my best friend once.... :)

Fishing a cove and trolling with the bow mounted motor. Wanted to get around the point to the next cove. Kicked her in Hi-Bypass and scooted into the next spot. Floated for a bit. He *was* standing on the back deck getting ready to cast. He says, "Hey pull us out a bit". Well... Being the gracious host I obliged. Neglected to take her out of HBP... Yep... I heard a loud splash... Then came the words...

Whats a feller to do... Oh sure, I laughed alot.. and I do mean alot... I was crying for petes er... Brents sake... hehe

Ah... the memories...

2 unintentional swims, how many more reasons do you need to wear a PFD?... especially when fishing over water below 60*?

Safety first eh!

I fell off my boat and never got wet!! Darn near sprained my ankle though when I landed on my concrete driveway. I wanted my wife to back the boat up just a little bit so we could drop the I/O over the grass and warm it up on muffs before heading out. When I held my hand to stop she hit the brakes pretty hard pitching me off the back of the boat as I lost my balance. Now I stand to the side so she can see me... that was all on me.:D

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

Your gonna do what into a BLEACH BOTTLE? Man I'm not sure I wanna party with you!!!! Thats just a little toooo close for comfort for that part of my anatomy to come into contact with that substance!!

Bleach bottle = very bad idea. the residual bleach, and the ammonia from urine will foam, steam, and boil out almost instantly. (I once forgot and left a small amount of bleach in a hospital style pee bottle after sanitizing it, and this happened to me in the dark, while half asleep, on a road trip. wakes you up REAL fast) Raw ammonia mixed with raw sodium hypochlorite (strong bleach) with actually smoke, then burst into flame. (at the chlorine manf plant I used to work for we used raw ammonia in a spray bottle to find leaks in liquid chlorine pipelines) very interesting stuff

on topic...I have not fallen overboard...yet...but I did walk out to help my dad launch his boat from a shorefront campsite once, and as I was pushing the bow, backing the boat out, I was walking in knee deep water, that suddenly went to a bottomless pit. I dropped straight down instantly out of sight. As I was going under I remembered I had my phone in the leg pocket of the cargo shorts I was wearing. That phone still works, oddly enough. Original 10 year old RAZR. My 7 yr old uses it as a play phone now.

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

One of the first memories of boating is falling off! I was about 4 years old, and had on a pfd. We were at a marina, Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa were carrying food, clothes, etc. for an extended trip, and I just couldn't wait. I ran down the dock, and I stepped on the side of the boat and done the splits, falling in. Mom about crapped her pants. I remember it like it was yesterday!

As to pee bottles, I like the 32oz Powerade or Gatorade bottles.

When it comes to wet cell phones, if you immediately remove the battery and let them dry out 2 or 3 days, they will usually still work. My last phone got wet 3 times, the last time being in the washing machine, and it still works. The important thing is to not try to turn it off, or push any buttons. Just remove the battery upon retrieval.

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I've gone into the drink a few times but one of the most memorable was when trying to beach the boat in the middle of the night during a camping trip. We pulled up to the beach and I had my son keeping an eye on the surf to make sure we didn't ground too hard. He told me we were on the beach and I took his word for it and jumped overboard to handle the boat. It turned out there was still about 5 feet of water beneath the boat

I'm really glad I had a warm, dry sleeping bag to crawl into.

Sometimes you can revive a wet phone by putting it in a ziplock with some rice and leaving it in a warm place. Unfortunately, it didn't work for my phone in this case.

I found for wet cell phone etc. is to remove the battery and put them into a bag full of rice for a couple of days. the dry rice will pull all the moisture out. So far works every time. Also don't try to power it on, or push buttons..

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I haven't fallen in yet, but the wife did a couple years back. My old boat for some reason didn't stop when I wanted it too, so as i slowly pull up beside a dock, she'd usually she jumped off to grab and hold the boat in place. Well we slammed the dock (typical of that boat) and got everyone's attention, she jumped off, tried holding us in place and didn't let go as we started floating away from the dock. She held on like a trooper and down she went. She had just gotten dressed back into her regular clothes and took a swim in front of everyone at the marina. The scary part was making sure she didn't get sandwiched between the boat and the dock. Naturally, she was up and out of the water in no time due to embarrassment. We still laugh about it, and no, i no longer have the boat that has to slam to a stop.

As for myself, i'm not a very good swimmer so i get on my knees and hold onto the motor off the back of the boat when i gotta drain things. Not sure what's worse, falling into the water or falling into the spot you just pee'd lol

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

My younger son has no fear of anything, least of all water. Needless to say, he's in a PFD if we can smell water. I make him put it on in the truck before he is allowed out on the ramp. I've caught him three times by the pants on his way in. He doesn't loose a step and now he's getting older and heavier so I'm sure it's a matter of time before we both end up in the water.

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I was close once doing the leg split thing between the dock and boat but my ex grabbed the dock in time.

Now my buddy on the other hand...

I took him out fishing in my boat for his first time. Told him what I needed him to do while launching and he aced it. Had a good time fishing, came back to the dock in the dark. Told him that all he needed to do was hold the line and keep the boat by the dock. I went and grabbed the trailer and started backing down, checking my mirrors. I'd check the driver's side, then dock side (buddy and boat are still there). Driver's side again, dock side again, oh... boat is too shallow. I holler at him to pull the boat back a bit. I start backing down again, checking my mirrors. Third time checking the dock side mirror, my buddy is GONE. Just disappeared. I hop out of the truck and just as I get on the dock I see a head pop over the side and a hand stick up with the boat line still in it. He walked clear off the end of the dock. It was the most comical thing I've ever seen. Only after he got on the dock did he realize he had his cell phone and Compaq iPaq in his pockets. We quickly yanked the batteries and put them on the vents in truck to dry. Both phone and Compaq worked the next day but I would have given him the money for new ones after that entertainment.
