Has anyone else but me fallen off their boat more than once this past year??
And I don't mean hanging out on the transom and play acting...I mean taken a full header right into the sea when you were least expecting it.
Time number one was this last September. I took a buddy, his wife and two adult kids to one of my good spots to grouper fish. The kids were on a tight schedule. We had two days to plan the trip. The first day was blown out and the second wasn't much better, but we went. 2' - 3' seas can be a little bouncy in my rig...
We hit a spot and I leaned over near the stern to get a little water in my deck bucket when a good swell hits, fills the 6 gallon bucket and whips my butt overboard all in the blink of an eye. I had yet to remove my cell phone, truck key fob, or wallet from my pockets. As I hit the water and bounced up, all I can remember seeing was four pairs of wide open eyes staring at their captain bobbing along in the Gulf, 22 miles from land...
In a few strokes, I was at the dive ladder, lowered it and scrambled in.
I was really pissed...as my new Sperry flip flops had dislodged somewhere in the dive and were bobbing off the back of the boat. I then removed wallet, keys, etc and dove back in retrieving them. Announcing this time that the water felt great; anyone else wanting a swim could do so...
I guess I saved face as the bite turned on and all of us had a great rest of the day and a boatload of fish..the highlight was when each of the kids had a 4' blacktip and reef shark on at the same time..
Just yesterday we went out. It was damned cold...19 as we were hooking up at 6:00 am. I had been out on cold days before, and usually have a warmer day ahead..after all, this is Florida..and the weatherman said so. The 1' seas were nowhere to be found. A steady 10 - 12 knot wind had the Gulf up to 2' - 3'.....hmm seems to be my magic nemesis number...
At the ramp the three of us are staring at some ice crystals on the pier...and wondering why the Yamahas won't go into gear??
A frozen binnacle needed a little sunlight to be co-operative. We headed out as soon as we could. The run out was met with a bottomfinder showing 51 degrees in 25'.
The run out to 44' was a little bouncy, and damned cold. I guess by 10:00 or so it had warmed to 45. Three drops and not a bite.
Needing to release some coffee, I leaned up to the gunnel. The wind was blowing right at my buddy. Discretion prompted me to move to the transom, steady myself with one hand on the motor and the other trying to find my pecker...bundled and warm under a layer of...skivvies, thermals, fleece gym pants and finally dungarees...
Unfortunately, there was a knot on the gym pants which required two hands to untie...and then...and then....you guessed it. Over the transom...
I may have been cold earlier...all I could think of was how damned nice and warm the water felt. Out where we stopped it was up to 57.
Up top I had a t-shirt, thermals, sweatshirt, lined work jacket, and heavy down filled winter jacket...all thoroughly soaked to my skin.
I had to get out of the wet clothes. I had nothing else to change into. Just several large, heavy beach towels..plus my buddy gave up his thick parka. No one wanted to share their pants, however..
The ride back was an hour. We had following seas, and it went pretty quick. I decided to get the truck, and stay in it with my towel sarong wrapped securely around me, watch cap and parka on up top. The looks from the two workers in the parking lot was worth recording...My buddies loaded the boat and off we went..
All I could think was..."Yes officer, that is the only thing I am wearing around my lower body." It sure felt un-natural, chicks with dresses and no panties have nothing on me...
Needless to say, the shower felt really really good. Also, this was my first time fishing that my buddies completely cleaned my boat while I washed up.
It was cold enough that my SaltAway dispenser had frozen and cracked the night before..
Needless to say, I have now loaded my boat with a fresh change of clothes..however, it seems I have no way to keep my *** inside it.....
We are looking for a bigger CC for the Springtime. No guarantee I won't fall out of it either, just may be a little more stable..
PS As the result of several posts on my local forum as well as THT, I have now installed a Pee bottle. Tucked away inside my cabin for future usage...
