Has anyone else but me fallen off their boat more than once this past year??

And I don't mean hanging out on the transom and play acting...I mean taken a full header right into the sea when you were least expecting it.

Time number one was this last September. I took a buddy, his wife and two adult kids to one of my good spots to grouper fish. The kids were on a tight schedule. We had two days to plan the trip. The first day was blown out and the second wasn't much better, but we went. 2' - 3' seas can be a little bouncy in my rig...

We hit a spot and I leaned over near the stern to get a little water in my deck bucket when a good swell hits, fills the 6 gallon bucket and whips my butt overboard all in the blink of an eye. I had yet to remove my cell phone, truck key fob, or wallet from my pockets. As I hit the water and bounced up, all I can remember seeing was four pairs of wide open eyes staring at their captain bobbing along in the Gulf, 22 miles from land...

In a few strokes, I was at the dive ladder, lowered it and scrambled in.

I was really pissed...as my new Sperry flip flops had dislodged somewhere in the dive and were bobbing off the back of the boat. I then removed wallet, keys, etc and dove back in retrieving them. Announcing this time that the water felt great; anyone else wanting a swim could do so...:D

I guess I saved face as the bite turned on and all of us had a great rest of the day and a boatload of fish..the highlight was when each of the kids had a 4' blacktip and reef shark on at the same time..

Just yesterday we went out. It was damned cold...19 as we were hooking up at 6:00 am. I had been out on cold days before, and usually have a warmer day ahead..after all, this is Florida..and the weatherman said so. The 1' seas were nowhere to be found. A steady 10 - 12 knot wind had the Gulf up to 2' - 3'.....hmm seems to be my magic nemesis number...

At the ramp the three of us are staring at some ice crystals on the pier...and wondering why the Yamahas won't go into gear??

A frozen binnacle needed a little sunlight to be co-operative. We headed out as soon as we could. The run out was met with a bottomfinder showing 51 degrees in 25'.

The run out to 44' was a little bouncy, and damned cold. I guess by 10:00 or so it had warmed to 45. Three drops and not a bite.

Needing to release some coffee, I leaned up to the gunnel. The wind was blowing right at my buddy. Discretion prompted me to move to the transom, steady myself with one hand on the motor and the other trying to find my pecker...bundled and warm under a layer of...skivvies, thermals, fleece gym pants and finally dungarees...
Unfortunately, there was a knot on the gym pants which required two hands to untie...and then...and then....you guessed it. Over the transom...

I may have been cold earlier...all I could think of was how damned nice and warm the water felt. Out where we stopped it was up to 57.

Up top I had a t-shirt, thermals, sweatshirt, lined work jacket, and heavy down filled winter jacket...all thoroughly soaked to my skin.

I had to get out of the wet clothes. I had nothing else to change into. Just several large, heavy beach towels..plus my buddy gave up his thick parka. No one wanted to share their pants, however..

The ride back was an hour. We had following seas, and it went pretty quick. I decided to get the truck, and stay in it with my towel sarong wrapped securely around me, watch cap and parka on up top. The looks from the two workers in the parking lot was worth recording...My buddies loaded the boat and off we went..

All I could think was..."Yes officer, that is the only thing I am wearing around my lower body." It sure felt un-natural, chicks with dresses and no panties have nothing on me...:p

Needless to say, the shower felt really really good. Also, this was my first time fishing that my buddies completely cleaned my boat while I washed up.

It was cold enough that my SaltAway dispenser had frozen and cracked the night before..

Needless to say, I have now loaded my boat with a fresh change of clothes..however, it seems I have no way to keep my *** inside it.....

We are looking for a bigger CC for the Springtime. No guarantee I won't fall out of it either, just may be a little more stable..

PS As the result of several posts on my local forum as well as THT, I have now installed a Pee bottle. Tucked away inside my cabin for future usage...

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

i was crabbing with a trotline, which is a long line with weights on wither end, that sits on the bottom. and you pick the line up at one end, and run it down the the other end. one day there was a really strong current in the bay ot ocean city, Md where i was crabbing.
so i'm trying to keep the boat parrel with the trot line, and the line gets under the boat, and eventually gets caught in the motor.
so i pull the motor up and try to get the line off the prop. So I am hanging off the boat trying to get to the prop, then a big wave comes up and rocks the boat, and over I go. I had my cell phone in my pocket too. Seems like that never happens if you just take your phone out of your pocket.

Now the fitst thing i do when i get into the boat is take my phone out of my pocket.

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

Back in the day I used to launch and retrieve by myself I had a system it never let me down. One day my dad decided he would go fishing with me. My system was simple launch boat tie to dock drop trolling motor and troll out of the no wake zone. I always put one foot on the dock and just give the boat a nice shove to push it away from the dock enough to drop the troller and just back right out and go. Well this particular day dad decided he was going to help I went and parked the truck came right back down to the boat the motor was running I didn't think anything of it and untied the boat. One foot on dock one foot on boat and push right as dad decides to put the boat in reverse.

Yep in the drink I went Cell phone wallet keys and all.

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I had a similar situation to Sig's, My wife and I have a pretty good system I dump the boat the wife takes the boat off the trailer and loiters around the ramp while I park the truck and trailer then she picks me up at the dock, she just noses in I jump on and away we go. Well this one day(not at band camp) I had gotten into a pissing match with a lady who wanted to park her car in a truck trailer spot single rather then park two spaces up with another single car(really chaps my hide she even complained to the ranger who promptly told her I was correct) anyway I run down the dock the wife pulls in and the ramp area is a mad house so the wife comes in a little "hot" but she had to, when I see her put the boat into reverse is my cue to JUMP! so I jump and the wife got a little more reverse then she planned and yep I got tossed backwards butt end over tea kettle. I hit the water head first. Our yellow lab made sure I was ok by cleaning my face when I finally made it onto the boat. We had a great day on the water.

lol.....my condolences...

if your new boat does not have a port a potty you might try a safety line to your waist.

but all joking aside.....that is how people get killed in lakes fishing buy themselves....over they go....whack on the head....and breath in water while unconscious. very very dangerous

Yup... just heard a statistic (and no, I have nothing to back this up with) that most male bodies pulled from the water have their zipper down. I go in a cup, then toss it. Maybe that's why I've never dunked myself, cuz Lord knows my equilibrium at times is challenged. And that's sober!

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

The boat has a porta potti for the gals...I ALWAYS carry a boat bucket. it's my rag bucket in the morning, changes to a baitfish holdin bucket later, and can be used as a pee bucket whenever.
When loading the truck and boat the night before, all my boat rags were in the bucket and frozen solid! I moved that bucket into the garage, and that messed up my normal routine...and I left it there. No other buckets on board to use...
One of my buddy's and a guide from a local forum says he always carries a modified milk jug. Handle and top still on and a beer can sized hole in a convenient place. In his post he said he keeps it for the OLD GUYS!!!
Nice and rainy here today..looks like I get to modify a bleach or milk jug and will have one on board...:)

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I have come really really close a couple times and up here in Indiana there are only 2-3 month of the year you want to even think about getting in the water, last time I was out at Thanksgiving the water was a balmy 39 and air was mid 30s.

I river fish and have had to get out of the boat a couple times to push off an unexpected sand bar, both times in late fall and falling in and actually going in on your own are way different.

The one time we were real close to the base of a bridge right in the middle of town with 20 minutes to the launch so no way was I getting my pants wet, stripped down to a t shirt and my skivies and pushed us off, thankfully it was dark.

I may as well curse myself all the way, in 20+ years of fishing neither me or my buddy has been hooked either.

So look for my post this spring where I get hooked in the ear as I am falling overboard.

If you spend any amount of time on a boat you need one of the G'Z line of phones from casio.

They are waterproof and just basically indestructable, they even have a new smart phone one, I have been swimming with mine a couple times including in the ocean, they will even take pics underwater.

I have seen things on you tube where a guy froze it in a bowl of water overnight then called it and it rang, they are pretty incredible.

Something that really bothers me is the number of boats I see, especially pontoons, that dont have a boarding or swim ladder. Scary, if you get a mo theres no way to get him back in fast. bad with kids

I added a swim ladder first thing to my 21, not for the intentional swimmers but for the involuntary ones. I keep a hook over ladder where you can grab it from overboard on another boat with high sides.

I need a ladder capable of loading an 80 lb yellow lab, every time she gets in the water I feel my back explode...

Re: Man Overboard..!!!!

I have one word for the phones. "Ziplock"

When I was on call 24/7 we used to put our pagers in a small tupperware. then put them on our backs in our wetsuits. Then hit the waves surfing. if the pager went off you could hear it. best part I got paid if I was surfing or working... I miss those days.

I am sure a good tupperware would work for your phone. I am surprised newer boats don;t come with a sealed compartment for that stuff. or do they.. (Heads to patent office) :D

Ask and you shall receive.

dog boat ladder

Actually if you Google dog boat ladder, you get 237,000 results. Enjoy.

You know after I posted I tested my googlefu and found that but I also found some mixed reviews with issues I hadn't thought of. I'm kinda thinking/engineering of another idea that may work better for collapsible ladders so stay tuned!! Redneck engineering on its way.....I have to go by the liquor store first.

Yah, i read some of the same reviews. Saw few other examples that made me think a bit too.

I agree a little decent redneck engineering ought to be able to beat what's being sold. Little bit o' wood, little bit o' carpet. If you got some RE inya, a solution should present itself. Good plan to start with the liquor store.
