Malfunctioning ESA module?

Is it possible for a bad ESA module on a 92 OMC Cobra 5.0 to cause the engine to die at completely random times--as if you turned the key off? This occurs in and out of the water (running on muffs).

Unplug it and see if problem goes away then you'll know, ignition switch would be a more likely culprit.
