Got it all back together set the timing to 10 because that’s what the cover says. Took it to the river and you could hear the TBV module kick in while idling through the no wake zone.
Ran well all day. Valves adjusted properly no valve rattling. Cranks easy when hot. Engine temp held at 170. Look like a win.

Read your plugs to make sure it is not running lean

It surely sounded like it

Another question AD
My outdrive serial number is 0F865656. Is this the correct outdrive for a 1996 V8? The ratio is really hard to read and looks like it says 1.61. Would this be the correct drive ratio?

I've worked on a lot of boats with that ignition system. The only time you can 'hear the module kicking in' is that the engine runs. If you're hearing anything, it's possible the secondaries opening.

If the '1996 V8' is a 5 litre, then 1.62:1 could easily be the right ratio. Or a 5.7 that has been set up for high altitude.

But 'the wrong ratio' is no big deal as a change of prop fixes that (given there's a prop of the right size available). I have often specified a different ratio than 'standard', depending on the boat the engine is going into ... Putting a 1.62 or even a 1.81 behind a single 5.7 in a big heavy cruiser works wonders.

I have a 19 pitch stiletto on this SR 215 Exp Cruiser now and thinking of trying out a 17 pitch for better load carrying during take off. I am running with the tabs down but it still likes to bog somewhat.
I am running at sea level and not really worried about top speed because this isn’t no Baja or Fountain.

I'm running a 17" 4 blade. Pulls way too many revs at wide open, but I very very rarely run at wide open (on my coast, the number of days per year it's calm enough can be counted on one hand). I'm propped 'light' for the same reason, better drivability and load carrying... It's not about top speed..
