I hate to say it, but I think we're being trolled guys. Adam joined, asked some surveying type questions and has not come back to even look to see what any responses are.

I may be wrong, but this fits a pattern.

When I first looked at his post I thought it was spam just trying to create interest in his business, I never clicked on the links, then they were deleted so I don't know what they lead to.

Minutes after he started the thread while he was online, I asked a question to see what kind of dialogue would get started, Nothing and he joined, posted and hasn't been back. The three links were to what are basically boat time share type sites or boat charters/rentals. If the guy is really interested, i would think he would answer questions and probably ask more.

Honestly, I don't know if he is looking for info, spamming, trolling, or playing around. It just doesn't feel right and I'll stay that way until he comes back.

So here is a question to further conversation... Would you rent your boat if it never left the dock? Through AirBNB, renting out cruisers in a slip is becoming more popular, boat people just feel more at home sleeping in a cramped cruiser than in a hotel room. Very little risk to the owner, the renter doesn't get keys.

(personally, I don't have anything close to falling into this category, but I'm looking at a couple for my next trip to Florida)

Now I feel vindicated! The nose knows. :D

The OP still hasn't checked in since starting this. :tsk:

We'll leave it open since smokingcrater has kinda changed direction into something positive.

On our two big lakes here, some owners do rent houseboats ala Airbnb. Usually the rental is like renting a lakeside cabin and the boat doesn't leave the dock/marina.

Spammer or not, it made me think about who I would let operate my boat without me being present...and even though my boat is older, the answer I would give is no one outside of my direct family - read that as only people that I would NOT expect to reimburse a repair should it arise.

As much as I prize my boat, losing a friendship because of hard feelings over damage or usage patterns is just not worth it to me. Even within my direct family, it would only be someone who I think has equivalent or better boating skills than I do. That sums up to a grand total of 3. Interestingly, I would that all three of them would return the boat in the same or better condition than they took it. Renting it out is a non starter for me. There are just too many things that could happen that would be in the gray area of an "accident" or damage due to negligent operation.

I have borrowed and lent whitewater canoes and kayaks to friends who knew how to paddle but those are simple and hard to break. When I was in the army I occasionally borrowed or lent a car during PCS's and never had a problem there either. However, I would not lend my motor boat and I doubt I'd borrow one from anyone either. There are too many chances for things to break or go wrong even if the borrower is careful.

As I said before on this post, damage is not usually deliberate. Damage is the result of the unknown......the lack of knowledge on the part of the borrower concerning your boat, how it handles when exposed to any of all the variables to which it is/can be subjected on an outing, and just how to operate it correctly.

If it's your boat it's your call and your's alone. You asked for advice you got it. Good luck in your decision.

If the boat was a cruiser and never left the dock, I could possibly get on bored with that. As for renting your normal boat, if it gets damaged and needs repair even if the renter paid to fix it, your summer of boating is down the drain. Getting in line to get your boat repaired at the boat repair shop is going to put you out of commission for a long time. Here in MN, we get three months of warm summer and that's it...even a small fiberglass repair takes a while when all is said and done. For that reason alone, I would be out.
