It just won't stop raining. I've measured over 18'' in the rain guage in the last week not counting today and tonight. :(

We are experiencing historic flooding. The nearby Mississippi and Ohio rivers are both 15 ft. above flood stage. All the smaller rivers and creeks that flow into them are over their banks. Even boat ramps on some of the lakes are underwater. The Army Corps Of Engineers is considering blowing a hole in a Mississippi river levee south of Cairo, IL that would flood thousands of acres of farmland to save the city.

Thankfully I'm not affected but a whole bunch of people are in a world of hurt right now. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

It's enough to make you step out onto the back porch, look up reverently, and cry "uncle".

Even though some humans don't like it, rain and flooding is good for the land! It purges it kinda like an external enema.

When my local lake flooded back in March, it went over the banks and 10' higher than normal and 3' above flood stage... I wore the Crappie out in 3' of water!!! Caught 43 in about 3 hrs, with 1/3 of them being over 14".

Break out the 2" jigs and fish shallow!!!

This is one of those times when I'm glad to live on a hill on a fairly crummy sloped lot.

And we, here in southern New Mexico, are enduring a severe drought and haven't seen any rain at all since February 3rd. Our normal annual rainfall is about eight and a half inches so you've received two years worth of our precipitation in one week. Sometimes I think there just ain't any justice in this world.

The local news just said the Army Corps of Engineers is blowing the Birds Point Levee near Sikeston, Mo on the Mississippi River to try and save Cairo, IL. Cairo sits at the convergence of the Ohio and Mississippi. The Ohio along the Kentucky and Illinois borders is now at 20' above flood stage close to the record set during the great flood of 1937.

The forcast for tonight is a LOT more rain. Keep everyone in harms way in your thoughts and prayers.

I'm pretty sure that those in harms way should've already left!... this isn't like a tornado that bears down on you in less than 60 seconds, this has been discussed and oncoming for about a week.

If you live in a flood prone area, you should leave when the water starts rising and the end to the rain is nowhere in sight!

Been a strange spring, that's for sure. Thoughts and prayers to all in these areas.

Was referring more to people losing everything they own, not so much loss of life. Yes everyone has had fair warning, sand bagging and levee reinforcment has been going on for a week.

It stopped raining. And the sun is even shining. :)
Total rain in 9 1/2 days= 19.1". Some areas got more I'm sure.

Blowing holes in the levee has dropped the Mississippi 1 1/2 ft.
The number of houses and roads underwater is staggering.

Re: Make it stop, make it stop

I guess the Missourians aren't too happy. Tough choice. I think the lesson is that if you live behind levees or flood walls, someday something is going to happen that exceeds their capacity.

Just up the road from me in Cedar Rapids, IA which experienced record flooding in 2008, they are voting today on whether to extend the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) until 2034 to pay for a levee/flood wall system that will allow them to rebuild and/or continue to build in the flood plain. Be interesting to see how that comes out. Some folks whose flood damaged homes were condemned and demolished find it odd that the city would pay incentives to developers to build new homes on those very same lots. Makes you say, "Hmmm."

We still have 75-80% of our snow pack, if tempratures go up into the low to high 70's over the next week we are looking at a major high water event, most likely flooding.

Re: Make it stop, make it stop

My back yard is about a 20 degree slope at the top of a hill ... and it is a swamp right now! I just finished mowing (we had 8 hours without rain and I finished mowing in the rain) and got the mower stuck a couple times ... ruts and mud. But if I didn't mow now it would be Thursday till the next 8 hour rain free segment (If I don't mow 2 times a week, the grass is too high to mow ... the grass loves the rain!). I have never seen so much rain, and I know we don't have it bad compared to others. Flash flood watch just came across the pager ... it is pouring now ... here we go again ... time to get the boat ready ... launching the the driveway soon (and I am 1/2 a mile from the closes stream)!

Hey, I am noticing the animals, they are gathering in pairs ...

Re: Make it stop, make it stop

I went to my Moms last night to put her furniture on milk crates and turn her power off then took her to my sisters..

The Blue River which is normally about 50 feet from her back steps is now at the third step and about 18 inches from being in her house.

It finally crested at 19.4 feet at 1245 this afternoon and is finally going down again, but for how long?:(

Looks like the Mississippi Delta is about to become another Great Lake. This A Pic of the possible backwater from the Ms. River. And this pic is old New one 8-10ft. higher.

Your getting "some" of the rain that passed through here I bet. I think most of it went south of you though. Did you measure? 19" here in the past 9 1/2 days.

Unfortunately Auto Tech, theirs a lot more coming your way. I hear talk of blowing more levee's in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Anyone see the levee blast? 250 tons of liquid explosive. It took them 20 hrs. to pump it all in. How'd ya like to be one of the crew on that barge? I talked to a guy today who lives in Sikeston, Mo 50 miles from the blast, he said it sounded like thunder and their house shook.

This is turning into a flood of epic proportions. :(
Good luck to everyone whose home is underwater. Or about to be.
