I have a Volvo Penta 5.7 GIC serial number 3869189 and 4012084896. I have a new GM marine Longblock from Michigan Motorz. All of the accessories installed on the the engine.

While removing the old engine the male main round 10 pin engine harness was destroyed while trying to remove so I wired in a new round plug.

Issue I am having is when main engine plug is connected to engine I get power to the starter from the key. Everything else works fuel pumps gauges etc. I get constant power to the ignition wire yellow/red tracer. So I turn the the battery isolater from off to on and the engine starts without the key being turned.

I have constant power to the two poles on starter relay picture with the battery isolater on the ON position.

You have it wired wrong
Do you have the pin out for the wiring harness plug?

 I have this one that is in the efi diagnostic manual. But I can’t find the one to that round 10 pin plug that I bought, and can’t remember who I purchased it from.

That is a 14 to 10 pin adapter
Are you saying that the boat is 14 pin and the motor is 10 pin?

If both are 10 pin and you bought the adapter and cut the plug off to use, could be other issues

No the boat is a 10 pin and the engine is 10 pin. The 10 pin plug from the boat was destroyed-the pins pulled out of the plug.

I was not able to find just a 10 pin plug to replace the boat side that’s why I had to utilize the 14 to 10 adapter.

If anyone knows where I can buy the correct plug that’s an option too. Otherwise I need to try and figure out which wire got soldered wrong.

This is the color and had it made up to show how to start a motor without it being connected to the helm. So pay no attention to it

The issue with the 10 to 14 pin is it also only uses 14 AWG wire and the main ground (pin 1) and hot (pin 6) need to be 10 AWG

This is the helm harness plug, I bought one when redoing mine

Was yours a 10 pin or 9 pin? I’ll have to count how many wires are actually used on the helm side of the plug. If that’s the case I’ll just buy that plug and be done with it. Did all the color coding correspond correctly for yours?

You are correct, the VP uses 10 pins, and the Merc calls it 10 but its actually 9
Pin 9 is a Green/White wire used on some models
Hey Scott Danforth have any ideas where to get a pig tail

Scott, that is the 10 to 14 pin connector, he needs the helm side 10 pin
I'm unable to find a VP 10 only the Merc 10

So just went out and took a look...my helm side only has 8 wires but it had a 10 pin helm side plug. I definitely want to swap it out if I don’t have the correct gauge wire.

Here is a picture of the 8 wires. Brown w/blue tracer, black, light blue, purple, tan, red, grey and lastly yellow w/ red tracer. 2DDC39E7-3655-4A90-8EF9-6C428D768FD5.jpeg

Looks like that uses the standard Merc 10 pin (only has 9 actual pins), and the Brown/Blue should be Tan/Blue
