these are mahogony splash rails on my '59 glasspar seafair sedan.

i removed the aluminum strip that was screwed into it and still have it, altho

it's in bad shape, eaten up pretty good from what appears to be electrolosis..

anyway, it seems to have a fiberglass base as a first coat, finished with gel

coat.i am almost ready to refinish and this wood is still raw.

should i glass it in, and should i bridge the wood up onto hull or leave a little gap for caulk?

also, i would really like to attach a strip of some kind of rubber rubrail type

protector strip over it rather than go with a metal strip like before-it just

didn't work out too well. can anyone advise me how to proceed from here?

or at least fill in some of the blanks?

Re: mahogony splash rails

I had the same boat even the same year. My splash rails were in worse condition. I actually made new ones. I had 2 choices to finish them, varnish or epoxy. I went with the epoxy. I attached them with 4200 and screws. I went with new aluminum and screws. I alway used boat fenders so the never kissed the docks.

so did you apply the epoxy onto the hull to bridge the splash rail to the hull? or did you leave the 4200 in the joint?

solution-2 coats laminating resin, 2 coats ever coat one step gel coat. bridged all 4 coats onto hull 1/2 inch. ready for another 50 years.

I epoxied (west systems) the splash rails seprate then joined the rail to the hull with 4200. I wanted the wood to show not blend in.
