I have a 1980 35 hp Johnson outboard and am trying to figure out the ignition wiring. One wire is B - battery, one is S-starter, C-choke and the two remaining wires which one is black and the other black with a purple strip. I assume these would be the magneto wires. One wire goes to ground and the other wire is not connected at all. I understand one of the magneto wires goes to ground but how can the other wire not be connected at all. It is just laying loose in the engine compartment. The motor ran but I believe was only running on one cylinder. I'm puzzled.
