magneto trouble

when re-attaching my magneto back into place, i tighten all four screws and it will not turn with the throttle movement. it locks in place. it is a 30 hp 1956 big twin. What am i missing? it should remain free to turn back and forth, right?

make sure the screws are in the right place, some are longer than others, too much torque on the screws. check plug wires for catching.

disconnect throttle and see if each move freely.

Throttle roller on the cam, not jammed under it???

nope. it moves free until i tighten it up all the way. i dont have a data bulletin to go by so i dont know if i am missing a bushing or spring washer or something else but tightening the screws clamps it to the retaining ring.

My 57 seahorse (10 hp) does that if the armature going from the magneto to the verticle throttle rod is folded up under the magneto. Also anything that locks up the throttle linkage will lock the magneto adjustment.

Did you put #77 in upside down?

everything looks to be installed properly. nothing is binding up. it is only when i tighten the screws that last little bit that it grips up. i found the parts diagram so i know everything is in order. it seems as though #77 should not be threaded all the way through so that the screws bottom out before it runs all the way up against #62. the parts were actually never removed. when i got the motor the magneto had been removed to replace some parts. i think i will remove, clean and inspect and see what it looks like.

Is it possible it's not the right mag plate as it was not on when you got it? It should go together smoothly.

dang if i see a #62 in that diagram. that is what i was saying screw too long.

oops, i meant #76. Screws are original and they aren't what is bottoming out.

As the screws tighten they draw the armature plate retaining ring up against the armature plate support, thus squeezing the two together and clamping tight. i am thinking now that the procedure is to put thread-lock on the screws and loosely tighten them so that the magneto moves freely and leave them there. although if that is the case then there would be no use for the lock washers that are on the screw heads. Still mystified.

that drawing does not look right, isn't there suppose to be a set if ball bearing between the plates.

i did not find any in the box of parts the guy handed me when i bought it. that would make some sense. i cant imagine this is a friction fit. Any mechanics out there that can explain the R&R procedure on the magneto?

Thanks everyone. i took it all apart and cleaned it really well in carb cleaner and put it back together and it is working well. not sure if it was the cleaning or when i put it back together that everything fell into place but it's a-ok now.

EXCEPT (of course) now the simplex starter is giving me trouble. i pull the cord and the pawls do not extend out to catch the ratchet. i think it has something to do with the friction spring under the equalizer cup. Any ideas?
