Last week I took the boat out and noticed right off the water was down maybe 4 feet. As I approached a landing what looked like a rod/reel caught my eye. From where it was and full of river mud no doubt someone lost it while the water was up..It appears to be almost new, A Quantum 7 1/2 foot graphite rod with a Shakespeare open face reel.....I cleaned it up and now Im ready to take it to the pier cause its a perfect rig for catching spots..

If you find my purple Zebco combo with Barney on the spool cap, keep it! Anything else I would hope to get back if possible when found ...

Couldn't agree more...but as OP states, he will lose no sleep at all.("the guy should have jumped in after it":rolleyes: )
Unfortunately that attitude is getting more common all the time....sign of the times I guess. :(

No guarantee that you can reunite a lost item with it's rightful owner, but the effort is worth making. So many lost items have personal worth well beyond their intrinsic value. Gift from someone who is now gone...etc.

Re: Lucky find for me.

Maybe a 14 year old saved up his paper route money just to catch the big cat fish he lost last year.
with all the excitement forgot to set the drag on his reel.

Now he gave up on life and is thinking about drugs and street corner women.

Please.... Maybe the owner should have taken better care of their fishing rod. Some items, sure, you try and find the owner, i.e. a wallet. A rod buried in mud in a river wouldn't qualify, IMO.

I understood that from your first post, but I respectfully differ; IMO the rod most certainly qualifies.

I do it routinely ~ not always with any success, but I make an effort; and always hope that someone else would do the same for me.

Any of you suggesting TFM try to find the rod's owner are being absurd and trolling. What's he supposed to do? Post flyers all over town? Come on, it's a $20 fishing rod.

Re: Lucky find for me.

Take out a half-page ad in the local paper with a photo of the rod and reel. They will have to correctly identify the poundage of test of the fishing line to certify ownership.

Also, it looks like a closed-face reel, not to nitpick. Nice score. I once found a grappling hook style kayak anchor, works great on tree branches.

Re: Lucky find for me.

Good find, TFM!

Free is good, but that same rod and reel combo would only go for maybe $5 at a pawn shop or 50 cents at a yard sale. The holy-rollers trying to guilt trip you into running ads to find the original owner are a bit over the top, IMO. As you said... if they really wanted it, it wouldn't have been lost.

As for conjecturing about how it ended up in the river bottom... maybe it was thrown in there by a wife/child-beating drug addict on the run from the law in a fit of rage over missing a decent fish! LMAO!

Nobody KNOWS how or why it got there... heck, maybe it was KARMA for something NICE that YOU did sometime! :D

Enjoy the new gear!

Re: Lucky find for me.

Yes BWR I think it is karma..The wife today even told me that it seemed like a sign for me to go fishing to the coast... The place I found it was not some little fishing lake but on the banks of Lake Wylie NC/SC . This is a LARGE lake with over 100 miles of shoreline bordering 2 states....Here is a picture of some of the remote shoreline .Look at the bottom and you will see a gray sand crane fishing.Look closer to the left of the crane and I think you will see a bear or wild dog watching it.I didnt see it when I took the picture,,Kinda spooky. What do you think? The shot was taken from about 100 yards with a small camera.Sand bars kept me in the main channel and I couldnt get closer.

NICE fishing hole! Looks like a great spot to catch some biguns!

As for that gray blob that looks sorta/kinda like a coyote... it looks to me to be the rootball of a tree that's fallen over. I looked at the pic up close with my photo software and there is a very straight line connected to the blob, moving at a downward angle to the right. The line has some weeds breaking up the outline, but it looks like a tree trunk to me.

It was definitely spooky looking and without the software and plenty of unpressured time to examine the image, it could easily look like an animal.

I saw a coyote while fishing one time and it clearly didn't care one whit about me being around. Completely fearless. Bugged me because I was heading to shore to go potty and that coyote didn't appear to give ground at all. I took my Ugly Stik with me as a weapon... when ya gotta go, ya gotta go! :D
