Lubricating Steering Cable

Hey everyone, I have an EZ Glide stick steering setup that is almost frozen up. I disconnected the cable from the motor, and since it is still difficult to move the stick, I am assuming the problem is in the cable or the steering box. What is the best way to oil the actual cable? I need a way to force feed oil up into the cable without the use of an air compressor. Would raising the end of the cable into the air, and by using gravity and working the stick back and forth, suck oil or ATF down into the cable? Any ideas?

Re: Lubricating Steering Cable

There are a few people that make oil injectors for the cables (for when they get a bit tight), but if it's frozen up, it's time to replace them. They are not meant to be a rebuildable item, but a replaced one. Also think about the possible consequences. If the cable does free up a bit, there's nothing to say that it won't freeze up (or at least limit it's travel) while you're at WOT with the family aboard. It's not that expensive...just swap it out.

I agree with replacement, Gorilla. Steering is just such a critical component that it must not be suspect to failure while underway. One more thing not to have to worry about, too!

Re: Lubricating Steering Cable

Replacement is best BUT, I have used this on motorcylce cables so it should work on a steering cable, only difference is scale.

Take a heavy bag and cut one corner out put the cable end through it and tape it off really tight, suspend the cable and bag in the air and fill the bag with a light oil and let gravity do its thing.

The main probelm with this is oil attracts and hold dirt so be looking for a replacemnet cable, lubbing it up will buy you some time but not fix your probelm which is a worn out steering cable.
