I did the unspeakable and drilled a hole in my lower unit. I was trying to clear out my speed pick up on my lower unit and drilled right through it and into the oil reservoir. Am I completely screwed and need a new lower unit or can I fix this? I’m not sure what year the motor is but it’s on a 1999 G3. The motor is a Yamaha 90 two stroke

Don’t sound too bad….you can fill the hole with JB Weld and/or fill the hole with epoxy ( like 5200) and a screw….if you thought to drill and tap the hole for a screw/bolt the metal shavings from the drill and tap could be hard to completely remove from lower unit gears and bearings…..probably just a blob of JB Weld forced into the hole with your fingertip may be the easiest.

Well that’s some good news. I barley punctured it so hopefully there aren’t any metal shavings. I’ll try to use some JB weld and see if that will fix my problem

Drain gear oil.------Repair with the " playdonium " and pressure test your work.-----Water leaking into the gearcase tends to get expensive.

This is the way I fix units that customers have dinked....The speedo passway makes a 90° turn and comes out top of gearcase thru fitting for speedo tube. Drain and remove gearcase, degrease speedo passage, take paper towel balls and push to rear of drilled hole, mix JB Weld thinned with acetone and pour into top of gear case cavity till exits speedo intake, cap off with tape and fill cavity to the top. Apply a IR heat lamp around 14-16" away from repair and heat housing to expand and kick off curing.
