I have a Merc 1150 and I have a question about the lower unit. The shift shaft, is it suposed to spin freely when the unit is off of the rest of the motor? Is there a certain position it is supposed to be in?

Re: Lower Unit

You should be able to feel detent positions where the gears are and you must match the lower unit shift shaft position with the upper shaft by moveing the lower shaft to match the upper or vis versa

Re: Lower Unit

Thank you for the reply. Also, I replaced the impeller and housing, should it be difficult to turn by hand?

cougar: did you lube the impellor at all?

most folks advise putting some petroleum jelly on the splines to help it move a bit.
I prefer to use KY Jelly myself because there's no danger of the impellor being damaged by the oil based products.
It doesn't matter too much anyway because the water is what lubes the impellor once it's running.

And yes, a new impellor is difficult to turn by hand and should make a small amount of noise: never turn it anti-clockwise !!!

Re: Lower Unit

The shaft should turn free in till it comes to the detent then you shold feel sping tenshion if you have none and the shaft turns 360 deg with none then either someone has pulled the shaft out of the cam or the shaft is broken, in either case the unit will have to be disassembled
