lower unit water pump replacement

i have an 1988 johnson 88 hp i am trying to remove lower unit after removing
all 7 bolts and shift rod from shift selector.it wiil not drop down .
i sprayed penetrating solvent between housings which did not help.
does any one have any suggestions that may belp.

If you have the shift rod disconnected from under the carburetors, try this next:

Take the spark plugs out and have some one rotate the flywheel clockwise while you move the gearcase gently forward and back and side to side. Keep the gearcase supported enough so that it won't fall if the driveshaft releases.
