I'm looking for a complete lower unit seal kit for a 1956 Johnson 10, Mod QD-17. I found one listed at Laings but they dont have any pics of it or a list to explain what comes with it. Does anyone know where to get a complete kit or know what comes in Laings kit? Any reason Sierra dosnt list a seal kit for this model? Thanks.

Re: Lower Unit Seal Kit

The 10-18hp 51-57 prop shaft seal by Sierra is NLA. I will assume that is why they no longer offer a kit for it.

Another option is vintage outboard, I believe the are priced the same as Laings. Ive been selling them for 25 bucks, I guess I should up my prices, lol.

Outboard motor parts, Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude, new, used, NOS, classic, and vintage

Laing's Outboards | New Parts | Johnson Evinrude

You will get the following in a seal kit:

prop shaft seal
drive shaft seal
shift rod seal (o ring)
spaghetti seal
prop shaft seal housing o ring
drain/vent screw gaskets
drive shaft o ring (beneath splines)
pivot pin screw o ring (phillips)

Re: Lower Unit Seal Kit

Another quick question. You guys have a manual you can reccomend to get me through this lower unit tear down? I have a couple of manuals but they mostly just have lots of parts diagrams and tips. They dont really explain how to do anything. I am mechanically inclined and have done all the work that has been done myself but I have never torn into a lower unit before.

Re: Lower Unit Seal Kit

Thanks for the pics but Im looking more for dissassembly instructions. How do the gears come apart? How do the seals come out, etc. Like I said, Ive never had a gear case apart before. I know this motor is very simple in design and Im confident I can do the work but Id like to read how it happens while I wait for the parts to get here. Thanks again!!

Also would you reccomend replacing the impeller while Im in there? I know it should be replaced when you open it but I just replaced it 2 years ago and the motor has ran less than 3 hours since because I just finsidhed the boat last week.

Re: Lower Unit Seal Kit

HI Blaster. Once you've split the gear case, the porpshaft, propshaft bearing, clutch dog, and both the FWD and REV gears will silpy lift out as a single assembly. You can then slide off the p-shaft bearing, gears and clutch off of the propshaft like rings on a finger. Be sure to inspect everything while it's all apart. The Clutch dogs can sometimes wear out a bit over time. The propshaft seal is housed in the p-shaft bearing itself. YOu remove it by using a standard oil seal puller. You can get one at any auto store for about $7. Then you simply lever the old seal out of the bearing. However, they can sometimes be stubborn so don't be surprised if you have to get creative and snip the old seal out of place. Take care that you don't damage the soft aluminum bearing. The drive shaft seal is found just below the impeller plate and is also removed with the seal puller. Here is a handy link with some good pics as well as a vid of how the gears work.
