Lower unit removal

Here we go again. 1960 Johnson 75hp. I have the service manual, unfortunately it doesn't have the step by step to drop the lower unit. I got it to drop a few inches, then it gets stuck. I read in other posts about the gear linkage disconnect, so I did that as well. Do I have to put the gears in neutral before I start to accomplish this? I am putting the pieces back together so I can start clean.

Re: Lower unit removal

when u unbolt it,and it drops down, look into the void and look for a screw, cotter pin, or bolt on the shift rod. It may have a
split shift rod, with that screw/pin/bolt holding the two pieces together.
Just a specultation on my part tho. But there are many lower units with this configuration. However, most allow for complete removal from the bottom without undoing it. Also, see if you can peer in there, and see the top of the pump body.
Some older engines had a threaded fitting on the discharge tube.

------------------
the Early bird get's the worm...So, he don't have to stop for bait.

Thanks. It looks like a split rod in the manual, I think I might just remove the pan and right cover to see more clearly. I don't think the exhaust is threaded, it looks like a clean copper tube. I can see the pump from the side. What about setting the gear in neutral? Necessary?

I think you are on the right track.
I doubt it is threaded onto the pump body,
but if it is, it probably wouldn't drop enough to see daylight though, and would have a plate to access it.
Unless you have to change the position of the shift rod to remove it, it shouldn't matter if it is in-gear or not,but you might get more room to work with it in reverse or
forward.

------------------
the Early bird get's the worm...So, he don't have to stop for bait.

Found the access point. 2 covers on the port side of the motor allow entry to where the screws are that hold the 2 halves of the rods together. There was a dead wasp in there along with a pine cone and some miscellaneous pieces I hope the motor doesn't need. Now to get the unit dropped.
