I have a problem. Seems like the lower unit is slipping out of gear. I would be going about 3000 rpm then all of a sudden I'll get higher rpms but the speed does not increase. It almost seems like its in nuetral but the boat still moves a little. I heard sometimes the prop will slip around the hub under a load. What could it be. Please help.

Re: lower unit or prop?

If you are not hearing any clunking or snapping out of gear, then it is likely a "spun prop hub." It is a rubber bushing inside your prop that holds the inside portion to the outside portion. It is designed to slip, in theory to protect the lower unit from severe damage incase you hit a rock. A prop shop or marine dealer can test it and have it "rehubbed" for you. Or you can buy a new one, and have the old one rehubbed and use it as a spare.

Thank you very much! I hear nothing, just the engine winding up to higher rpms. I got a new prop in hope that was the problem. I will take it out this weekend for a test. Thanks for the advise.

Roscoe is right, no doubt it's a spun hub, your new prop should perform good.
