the oil-seal began to leak, so i wanted to take off the lower unit to look at it. It is a salt-water engine. The first screw, okay, then, the other tree broke off. Well,as long as i get the lower unit off it is okay, but it will not move an inch. tryed with a hammer at the cavitasion-plate, drillet 3 hole to get a screwdriver inn, no, didnt work. Do anyone know? If nobody knows, this engine goes to the scrapyard, cant run it with one screv at the lower unit (if it ever will go off)
By the way, do anyone know how to remove salted bolts? (sitts like hell). WD-40?

Undoubtedly, your driveshaft splines are stuck in the crankshaft. Turn the engine upside down and liberally spray a penetrating oil (not WD-40) through the exhaust toward the driveshaft, in the hopes of getting it to run down the driveshaft to where it goes into the crankshaft. Wait a day, then try driving hardwood wedges between the lower unit and the leg to put some pressure on it. Repeat spraying and banging.
The only thing holding the driveshaft in the lower unit is the water pump housing, and it may break. That'll at least give you better access to the driveshaft. The housing may still be servicable.

Once the lower unit is free, you can go to work on those bolts. The answer to protruding stuck bolts on an outboard is heat and penetrating oil together. If you use a propane torch to heat with, you'll never melt the casting, so you're pretty much safe. It will take some time to warm it up though. You'll want it sizzling hot. Then try to extract the screws using either locking pliers, or clamping the reminents of the screw in a vice and turning.

If worse comes to worst, or if the screws have broken off flush, you'll need to drill them out.

Hi Henning

Best method I have ever tried to get salt corroded bolts out was TIG welding a nut or another bolt to the end. The warming loosens the bolt and in 99 % of the cases you can turn it out when cooled. In 0,5 % of the rest by second TIG welding. The rest - watch your language!

Do a search here on "Screaming at lower unit" plenty of good advise. I have a 6HP Chrysler I cant seperate though - some can be real tough.

I have 3 of them my self, and yesterday offered no.4 (1968) ;) . Used some silicon on the seal, so I hope the lower unit sits like hell when I take it to the lake in a few weeks!!
I am not going to send it to the scrap-yard, was a bit angry on it  , use a day trying to get it off, without results  .
