Lower unit oil

How much lower unit oil do I need to put into my 1961 40hp Johnson outboard motor? Also, I can get it to go into reverse but cannot get it to go forward. What could be the cause?

Fill the lower unit from the bottom fill hole until it squirts out of the top vent hole. Don't take out the phillips head screw!

Don't know about the shift. Is it a manual or electric shift?
If it's manual, then it could just be a cable adjustment. Try disconnecting the shift cable and shifting by hand.

I would not worry about the oil change till you have figured out the gearshift.

OK thanks on the oil. I did disconneced the cadle and shifted it by hand and it moved really slowly?
