Lower Unit- mechanic help

When I went to replace my lower unit oil in my 1992 merc. 150, it was full of water. I took the lower unit off, removed the water pump, and inspected the drive shaft seal. It is obviously bad and I think all the seals need to be replaced. I called a few local marina's and they told me they could not quote me a price. I would be very greatful if any experienced mechanics would tell me about how long this procedure would take. I was guessing a few hours since I already have the lower unit off and the water pump removed. Any help would be very appreciated. I have the manual, but to remove the bearings requires special tools that I do not have. Thanks for any replies in advance, Joe.

Re: Lower Unit- mechanic help

On some of my outboards, I have been able to remove the two main seal culprits (input and output shaft seals) by picking them out from outside. Then with new seals on the drain/vent screws it usually does just fine.

I usually drill holes in the seal to insert a curved tool; preferably on a seal removing slam hammer (harbor freight has them for a few bucks)and drive it out. Or you could hit the backside of the handle to drive it out.

Have also used screwdrivers and hammers to dent the outer diameter metal afterwhich the seal will come out. Takes a little while, but you can get it out.

Then I carefully clean out any metal particles and lube up the new seal real good before tapping into place being careful not to cut the rubber on the shaft splines. Sometimes wrapping the shafts with paper helps to get the seal on without cutting the sealing surface.

And be sure to pay attentionto the direction the old seal is in place, to insure that you get the right side in so that it seals properly.

You can do it.

Mark

Thanks Mark. I will keep that in mind if the repair bill quote is to much. Any idea how long it would take an experienced mechanic to change all the lower unit seals? Thanks, Joe.

Re: Lower Unit- mechanic help

Most of them go by flat rate book charge regardless of time involved unless you are quoted otherwise before hand. Probably less than hour since you already have it removed and ready to place on the bench.
