Lower unit identification?

Good evening everyone,
I am new to the forum and hope you are all doing fine. I have a problem with a 1973 65hp Johnson that I was hoping someone may be able to help me out with. I was going to change the impeller on the lower unit, and when looking at the part numbers on the water pump housing and impeller plate they dont seem to match up with what the manuals and web sites say it is supposed to be. My question is this, is there a part number stamped on the lower unit that can tell me what it came off of? I would like to get a gear case seal kit as well but just dont want to get the wrong parts. I know the leg is different because the color green is just not the same shade as the rest of the outboard. Any help would be great.

Hi Hidef,

Thank you for your reply. The model i have is basically the same (its a 65ESL73R) and im sure the diagram for the 65ES73R is more than likely the same parts. The parts that are on mine are different though. The imp. housing is#438543 and plate# is 341038. Which means you are probably right about it being a different year. I measured the gear housing and it seems to be a large? at 4 1/8" dia. but measuring the height is proving a little more dificult. The height i got from bottom of fin to top of casing is 16 1/2" and in all the diagrams i look at they call for 17 +" or 15 1/2". Is there any other way to narrow it down? any help would be really apreciated. I just want to make sure i dont waste money on the wrong gear seals or find out that the unit has the wrong gearing for the power head.
