My 1975 90 hp merc. there is something in the way for me to pump 80-90 in to the lower unit. I can see it thur the little fill hole, it is something inside, blocking the hole. Moving my gear shift, don't help. WHAT CAN IT BE? And I suppose I fill it to the top hole with lube, right. Thanks. "Deb's fixer"

Fill from the bottom hole till it runs out the top hole.

You try moving it with a screwdriver?
GENTLY push on it.See if it moves.
Was there a small magnet on the end of the drain plug?
Pics?

It is either a chunk of metal (bad) or a piece of an old gasket (not so bad). See if you can determine if it is hard (metal) or soft. If soft, try a small screw or punch and see if you can grab it and drag it out.

If it is a chunk of metal, the gears may be bad....

Are you sure you are looking at the DRAIN/FILL hole? You drain the lower unit by removing the big screw in the underside of the lower unit gear housing. You remove the top screw to serve as a vent. You then FILL the lower unit throught the drain hole until fluid comes out the top hole.
