Re: Lower HP for outboard vs inboard.

I saw a similar discussion where a guy was arguing a toyota rav4 would outpull a 2000 f350 diesel because it had more horsepower. He was only speaking engine wise. Getting on plane, especially when towing, is where low speed torqe is important. Yes there are too many variables to consider butmy boat has a 350mpi and I do like its grunt. It also tops out at 58mph.

I have a 6.2 with very similar results ;)

The RAV4 guy is right though IF they are both geared to allow revving at peak horsepower. You need torque, to make horsepower, but RPM puts the two together.

Could the fact that the I/O's engine weight is supported by the stringers; not the transom have anything to do with the difference in HP ratings?

With the outboard, the transom must absorb everything; the weight and thrust.

With the I/O, it only has to absorb the thrust, which is probably about the same as a similar power outboard.

What is your boat. I have a Caravelle Interceptor 232 that I bought in New Jersey. I towed it 800 miles with a Kia Sorento. I recently bought a truck with 245 hp. It is a dakota quad with a 5.9. It was cheap so I bought it to tow the boat. I didnt want to hurt my wifes kia. The kia has 280 hp. It towed the boat fine but any hill was a 2 or 3 gear downshift rpm redline event. It keep the speed but the engine was constantly screaming. Pulling with the dakota is much more relaxed. Much fewer downshifts and and less screaming from the engine. The Kia has the power and may win a race pulling the boat but the way it makes the power is a lot moe hectic.

LOL, and you disagreed with me? You have already proven it :)

Mine is a 228 Carrera. Local builder here now gone. She is a a true 23 footer, and today with a swimstep would be called a 250 probably. She'll run 57 with the 6.2 320 MPI. Bravo 1. Somewhat similar to your boat. She's in my avatar.

I dont disagree. I just see the ob as the kia and the io as the truck. Sometimes we are on flat ground, me and wife and sometimes we are going up a hill, 8 people and pulling 3 tubes. The big difference is the boat doesnt have a six speed tranny.

My boat had bottom paint. They painted over barnacles and everything. I took it to gel coat this winter. Havent ran it yet but that has to help.

And I see them both as really cool marine power plants. In the OPs original post, the difference in performance is probably minor, and the OB may actually be faster with 80 less horsepower due to the weight savings. All good, man. Thanks for the exercise :)
